    Statewide Hiring Freeze?

I've been looking into a career in law enforcement for some time now, and it seems now that I am about to be done with school (in July), no one's hiring. I've heard from multiple people in multiple locations spread from San Jose up to Sacramento that they, as well as their friends, have been applying to no avail. Rumors are spreading that there is some kind of "hiring freeze" because of a number of factors. Is there any truth to this?

Unfortunately I believe you are correct. I have good friend that is a pomona officer and just got recently layed off. Whats worse is the city just ditch the whole department and is giving jurishdiction to the LA sherifs department. I believe the only departments that is growing are the sheriffs.. You may have a better chance in getting a job in the fbi or cia because you know how government is growing. Good luck to you and I hope you land a job when you get out.

Any number of agencies are frozen on their own accord, but as to a single statewide freeze... no info. Jobs in local city and county LEA across the state are getting increasingly harder for folks trying to break in. There are staff reductions happening all over the state and the pool of well qualified and in some cases highly experienced laterals available makes it all the more difficult.

Federal uniformed service, Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) in particular, is growing headcount and is expected to for the next few years.

There is not a "Statewide" hiring freeze. Many departments across the state as not hiring and some are laying off due to budget issues. Each department does their own hiring based on the budget of their jurisdiction.

Pomona did NOT contract with LASD. They are simply studying the matter, which they have done many times over the years.

Most Sheriff's departments are not getting any bigger. Their budgets are controlled by the county governments, and there is not a county in the state that isn't having budget issues.

The CIA isn't law enforcement, so if you want a law enforcement job, don't go that direction. They are an intelligence gathering organization. Nothing negative to say about them, just they aren't LE. The FBI has a habit of hiring people with prior LE experience and a bachelor's degree is a minimum.

Look all over, there are still some agenies hiring, and you may have to look out of state too.

        Best of luck.

Thanks. So as I understand it, there are still a few places hiring in California, but they are few and far between. That kinda sucks... oh well. I'll just have to be a more qualified candidate than any other applicants!

Maybe you should try going more south, like San Diego or LA. I also believe some cities in the Bay Area are hiring, maybe Santa Clara SD(???). But good luck.

The killer for the new kids is the pool of ~1,000 POST certified LEO's that have been laid off from agencies all over the state. A lateral is far less expensive to make productive than a new officer (9-12 months worth).

Corrections is always hiring, as are the Feds. 3-4 years from now there will be plenty of LEO jobs as retirements / resignations reach the point where agencies are forced to hire & the pool of desirable laterals is depleted.

You know, about twelve years ago when became a LEO most agencies could not find qualified people to hire; most agencies lowered their job standards in order to get people working. Now, we are finally getting people that are qualified for the jobs and no one is hiring because of budget problems. Oh, how sad our times are right now.

But right now we have a bad cycle, and in a few years, it will get better

CDCR isn't hiring right now for any peace officer or CO's, at least thats what it says on their website.

Although the pay leaves alot to be desired, the Federal Bureau of Prisons have major vacancies in a few places in California ie Atwater, Dublin etc. More info can be found on their site, they will hire you in no time. It is not a bad way to get your foot in the door, at least for a Federal LEO agency.

Down in San Diego the Feds were recently hiring Marine Interdiction Agents.

Hey I just found a listing for Police Officer at Travis AFB in Fairfiled, Ca. (on USAJOBS) I think its a DOD Police position. You wont be putting away felons on a monthly basis like a city cop but hey at least its an LE job in a recession hiring freeze. A foot in the door at least.
