This is probably some of the best advice you can get. I made it a habit when I would get a new trainee that we would go to HR on our first shift and set up a 457 plan (deferred compensation) account for them. Many of them kind of complained a bit as they thought. "I can't afford it".

To a man Each and every one of them thanked me years later when they saw how their $$ compounded.

I started my 457 account as soon as I could and maxed it each year. It was amazing how it grew over the years.

As for real police work. Always remember to have fun. Don't dwell on the bad things you see. Enjoy life in your "mobile office".

ALWAYS write good neat detailed reports which are easy to read and are accurate. Very few people actually see you do your job. But many many people read your reports. Your will be judged by supervisors, Detectives, DA's, judges, defense attorneys, and everyone else who sees "your paper". That reputation will follow you throughout your career.

You may be a great cop, but if you don't write good reports you will not succeed in your career.
    Poke'm with a stick!

First and foremost, congratulations. You are going to have fun. As for FTO...you're going to screw up. Everyone does, and your FTO's are going to test you and stress you until you do. Learn from your mistakes, and don't make the same one twice. One tip that saved my bacon on FTO, because I didn't grow up in the town I'm now policing, was to take my radio and map in my personal vehicle and drive around the city on my day off. Geography and navigation are hard parts of FTO, and anything you can do to make FTO a little easier will pay big dividends.
