I have a high school type back pack with some preps in it at my house. It's my BOB.

    1. Food. - Power bars, jerky, trail mix. Stuff I eat pretty regularly and rotate out to keep it fresh.
    2. Water. 2 large Smart waters - again-- cause I drink it regularly and thus easy to rotate out.
    3. Pistol/Ammo. Same as my duty carry. Thus takes same mags and parts can be cannibalized.
    4. Space blanket and first aid kit including triage supplies.
    5. Multi battery that can be used on cell phones and all kinds of electronics.
    6. Flashlight and extra 123 batteries.
    7. Rain poncho.
    8. High powered whistle.
    9. Pocket folder.
    10. Compass.
    11. Meds.
    12. GPS.
    13. Eye/sun glasses.
    14. Sunscreen.
    15. Windproof lighter.
    16. Carabiners.
    17. Cell phone.
    18. Anti-bacterial wipes.
    19. Socks.
    20. Beanie.
    21. Ball cap.

There's probably a bunch of other stuff that could be put in it but this is what I had time/ energy to put together. It's come in handy quite a few times mainly when I'm to lazy to walk downstairs to get a snack.

Spare range bag with most of the above, plus:

lifeboat rations - SOS or similar, because they can take the heat without melting or spoiling, and don't make you thirsty

water purification device & tablets - plenty of water around here, not always pure.

parachute line, 50' with a couple of cord locks. A zillion uses.

      KaBar

3 ways to start a fire

2 or 3 cheap, lightweight plastic rain ponchos

      Soap, camping towel

Medicated powder (you'll feel the need after you've hiked a few hours!)

Detailed map with alternative ways to get home when major roads are blocked. View the same area with GoogleEarth or FlashEarth, and mark up the maps with more details.

Stop it. It has hit the fan, numerous times, in this country. Did people in New Orleans get disarmed? I guess in Manhattan, they already were.

Keep your gas tank full. With major highways and surface streets closed it could take you hours to drive a dozen miles.

That's what we are doing, including the four Jerry cans in the garage. You can imagine what gas prices will look like if we have an emergency.

If you're on the road, most I assume will be working their way back to family. How far is your furthest patrol area from home? how many miles a day can you walk, if you had to? What areas would you need to avoid, and how far would you need to walk around them to avoid? You also might want to consider some civi clothes to change into.

I would plan around provisions for the worst case, including some good detailed hand maps.

Post Katrina? Yeah... they were. This is why the Congress and many states, including California, passed laws afterward that forbid local authority from doing what Mayor Ray Nagin and his police chief at the time ordered be done.
