    Louder than Words...LEO Disaster Preps

    Up for discussion:

So I've seen the sign before, but it's on a lightly traveled road and I forgot where it was. Well, I found it today and thought I'd snap a picture. Brings home the concept of prepping at home and at work! The good 'ol SAF travels right through my work area, but this is the only written marker I've found. You can also see my high-mileage (sub)urban (I mean rural) assault vehicle. Sorry for the poor quality cell phone pic. I have some disaster supplies in the back, and I'm probably the most prepared of us regular patrol guys when at work, but I have a long way to go...

So what do you think we need to do as LEO to prep for the possibility of a big disaster like an earthquake? I know we have policies in place, but at least in my dept, the policy doesn't really adequately address what the reality would be in a large-scale disaster. Let's discuss equipment, training, how to compartmentalize/carry said equipment, and anything else.

So caption the pic, make fun of my ride, offer suggestions for LEO work-related disaster supplies, etc...P.S...This is a pool vehicle, so if you see it rolling around it may or may not be me...

It's a bit off-topic, but in case of a disaster, please, beat up that guy and take his guns. He's too smug for his own good

I'm sure you have some guys trained in it, but NIMS and ICS are phenomenal systems in my opinion and have been proved to expedite the clean up/restorative effort post incident across a wide variety of scenarios.

I've had some NIMS/ICS training, and there are large-scale policies in place, but I'm talking about the individual immediate response gear that we may/may not need. Long term, NICS is good, but that takes time, and during that time, we have to make do...

I work 25 miles from home, so i have put together a basic kit with some basic tools such as , Food, (MRE plus 3 granola bars), Water (1 gallon in small water bottles), knife (utility knife), utility tool (leatherman), Headlamp(with extra lithium AA batteries), basic First Aid kit and Trauma kit, AAA paper map, compass, whistle, long range GMRS radio (wife has other in home earthquake kit).

This is just a basic emergency bag with just enough to get me home. I am at STARs, so if you are ever there, send me a message and we can meet. Stay Safe

i would go to costco and buy a couple of boxs of snickers or whaterver candy bars you like and will last the longest, water purification tablets or a filtration system, flint and steel the ones with the magnesium starter are a life saver, your vehicl has a c.b. im sur but ide get a long range radio just in case. a shovel or a hoe. anything you can think of that will keep you or whoever your saving in high hopes and keep you occupied, batteries are a must...... be realistic about what you get and the amount you get. it could be a few days worst comes to worst.

My partners and I started putting together a "bailout" bag "active shooter" bag, or some might call it the "oh S*** bag"... Basic stuff like multitool (leatherman or other), department ammo (that we purchase on our dime, not the state) for all three weapon systems (.223, 00, and .40), basic first aid kit, batteries, and food.

While most of this stuff is supplied in our day to day routine, there's no way to tell when a disaster or riot may happen. If you're extended or sitting on a post for a long time, or you find yourself in the next Hollywood shoot out, you're prepared.

You can never be over-prepared.. At least, I don't think so. You're not only looking out for yourself, but your partners as well.

                          +1... well thought out.

I keep a "get home" backpack in my truck on the assumption that roads might not be passable, or that I might have to shelter in place where ever I am for a day or two. The loadout is very similar to the above, although I include a small entrenching tool.

I also include a couple of packaged silver emergency blankets, a small packaged silver emergency tent, a $2 PVC poncho from OSH, a boonie hat and a shemagh for head and neck cover. A change of socks and skivvies, a pair of BDU pants and a long sleeved t-shirt rolled up. A pair of waterproof boots top it off, my street shoes are expendable in that kind of a situation I figure. The whole thing goes maybe twenty five pounds loaded up so it's an easy carry.

Work to home is a twenty + / - mile straight shot on foot, somewhat longer if I have to go cross country. The earthquake kit in the shed at home should keep my wife and I going for at least a couple of weeks.

No... and state law forbids it anyway.

I think one of the best things mentioned so far is a PAPER map. Today people depend so much on their phones/cars/etc. which might not work so well during a disaster. I know I have one in my car just in case, but it's a good thing to keep in a disaster bag.
