The concept of needing a "foot pursuit" policy itself is just plain silly.

Contain them, Call in the Land Sharks, deploy AR15's and MP5's, Land Sharks get to chew them up. If they pull a weapon while being eaten alive by a Belgian Malinois, they get shot. Period. That's been our policy for years. This new stuff doesn't change that. One on one foot pursuits are tactically unsound, and as "retired" put it, it's nothing new. It came about from the Pohlman shooting (1978) where we lost a deputy in a one-on-one foot pursuit.

I remember being at the range when the flag was lowered to half-staff.

        Split Second Decision

This is the "booklet" that the LASD came up with as a result of their panel review by Master Field Training Officers.............take it for what it's worth.

As for an actual policy change, this doesn't really do that, best I can tell.

Why would anyone chase an armed person? You should just shoot them as they are running away. You have an obligation to shoot them in the back so they can't hurt a citizen or other officer.

This is a very well done document. It doesn't say much and I wonder, in today's times of laying off officers, was it worth the money to produce this. The same could be explained on two printed sheets of regular paper. This looks like a media hand out piece of crap, with pictures and Baca smiling, that says really nothing new!!

sac550, if I were you I would really restudy your current shooting policy and homestead your house, car, wife, children and anything else of value you possess!! I think you should have included a smiling, grinning, laughing face with that post!
