    Highway Patrol

Hi, this might sound silly. Can a Highway Patrol Officer pull me over and give a citation in a city street that is not designated as a highway?

Yes. Below is the Vehicle code section that applies.

    360. "Highway" is a way or place of whatever nature, publicly maintained and open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel. Highway includes street.
A police officer or deputy sheriff can also cite you on the freeway. We (not me anymore since I'm retired) have you covered every which way to Sunday.

    A little levity only.

      Yup.
The officer's commission is granted by the Governor, so he is bound to enforce the law anywhere in the state. Gone are the days of "if we make it to the county line, we're home free" (and it really was rarely like that because hot pursuit normally allowed transition of jurisdiction).

thanks for the clarification,.. I was under the impression that if I made it to another city, one city's officer would not pull me over. Thanks a lot

When I was working Paramount out of Lakewood station in 1982, Long Beach had just that kind of policy. All pursuits ended at the city line. Of course, then they were in our area a lot of times and they didn't end until they ended.

It changed when they got rid of the council members that voted it in and the chief.

Well.... LBC Council/PD did their job and ran the riff-raff out of the city, right?

Well, that is one way of looking at it. They ran them into our hands or OC leas, or Compton PD.

The state of california is CHPs juristiction. Even more so after the california state police and california highway patrol merger years back.
CHP even respond to domestic violence calls and just about anything in rural areas. I know people that live out in the desert and if they call 911 CHP responds.

Even a game warden can pull you over in the middle of town or on the freeway and write you a moving violation or for expired registration...

Drive safe and obey the law. and you wont see those red and blue lights in ur rear view

They also have a mutual aid compact with Az and Nv so sometimes they can pull you over in those states

All "peace officers" in CA have statewide authority.

However, some agencies do not like their officers giving tickets in other areas since the other areas get the ticket money...

CHP has a generous pursuit policy.
