    Funny story about LAPD Academy

A friend of mine went through the LAPD Academy and told me that she had a hard time with weapon inspections. The D.I.'s would always get on her about the fact that she still had tiny bits of crud in the nooks of her Beretta. She had to pay for her infractions. She said she would spend hours cleaning her Beretta every night but her weapon was never good enough for the D.I.s. One of the recruits in her squad absolutely never had a problem during weapon inspection. One of the D.I.s finally told my friend that she better get her weapon clean or she may find herself out of the Academy. The DI told her that she should team up with the "perfect" recruit so that she could pass her inspections. After her dressing down and when she was in the locker room, she asked the perfect recruit how she always passed inspections. Her answer was that she owned three pairs of shoes and payed to have them shined every three days. And for her beretta, the big secret was that she placed her beretta in the top rack of her dishwasher and washed it with the rest of her dishes. After every wash she would simply spray some break free into the trigger area and the slide and simply wipe it down for inspection. My friend told her that putting it in all the water was going to ruin the internals. the perfect recruit answered that all the recruits were going to get new berettas issued upon graduation so it didnt matter. well my friend followed the DI's advice and she did what the perfect recruit did and she placed her Beretta in her dishwasher at home. Needless to say the DI's were impressed with how clean her weapon was from that point forward. This story just made me laugh. stay safe everyone and keep your weapons clean LOL

a fair number of people that buy milsurp guns clean them in the dishwasher.

it really does not hurt the gun any to be cleaned with water as long as it is dried properly and a dishwasher does have a drying cycle.

It seems like there could be a better solution but at least that got the DIs off her back.

She has been working for My department for several years so I would assume it was about 7 or 8 years ago that she went throught the LAPD academy. She left the LAPD after the Academy because she realized it wasnt for her. She told me this story just recently.
I laughed all day when she told me the story. stay safe everyone

HAHA...we had weapon inspection twice....When we were 1st issued and shown how to clean, and when we turned them in. That's what you get with sig!
Our range master was on 15,000 rounds without cleaning last I heard, without a single malfunction! p226r in .40! He was going until he had a malfunction to see how long it would take.

I had a friend who worked at a shooting range. he told me that they used to clean the rentals that way. makes sense if you have a whole bunch of guns that you don't care about too much and only a few employees.

Just like with anything else being put through an inspection...have multiples! Unfortunately, like most of the other cadets in my class, I only had one firearm for the academy. On top of that, it wasn't mine! It was loaned to me by my good friend and it had already been through 3 academies prior.

I had Class A inspection gear, extra range gear, extra everything and I loaned some stuff out to other cadets that had forgotten one thing or another "just in case". Thankfully, I was never "Gig'd"

Keeping it clean wasn't a problem at all...I fondled that thing and stared at it for hours...especially since our inspections were being done by a Chippie Commander! That guy had ZERO tolerance.

I've got a special place in my heart for Beretta 92's!!!!

In the Corps, It was in the TM to clean the AR with hot water. I don't think it's too unusual to use water to clean a firearm. Just make sure it gets lubed post bathing.

Hey, I routinely scrub my polymer framed handgun with a toothbrush and dish soap. Helps get off all the residue both inside and out. Works great for me and have not had a single problem with the internals over the years.

Nobody worried about lead contamination in the dish washer?

I second the bit about lead contamination on those dishes. Very bad idea--even if the machine is otherwise empty you still risk contaminants in the next wash. Some instructors even use a separate washer/dryer to clean their range clothes because of cross-contamination issues.

I have always cleanned muzzle loaders with nothing more than a bucket of hot water and dish soap. It's the only way to get them real clean.
