i m all for leo safety. i like leos i think they need to be backed up and supported as much as we can. although these comments- "Many non-LEOs don't know that active anti-LE types, from the worst gang members to protestors to defense attorneys, are always gathering intel to use against us. In person observations, TV shows, media/news, internet, you name it." true but to minimize this just give an explanation why it too sensitive to divulge. when we ask about tactics for example in my case i want to know all i can so that the BG's don't have the upper hand when an incident occurs and, maybe i don't have the money to train or the time to search other places for info. we ask you guys because leos that are cgners are the best leos out there and we know you guys truly care about our rights. if you feel it is unsafe just explain why we are big boys we'll understand. and the part of "all you need to do is..." that makes me feel like im a child and you are scolding me. i am a grown *** man and when people ask questions all you have to do is not post; if your concerned for safety post a warning in the thread reminding leos of protecting themselves and other leos when divulging some parts of tactics. imo that comment was too disrespectful we are not idiots or peasants. that kind of talk is very condescending. but safety is a priority just explain your reason's please we don't like walls thats why we don't live in communist country or totalitarian regimes.yup...
And as far as the original topic is concerned, IMO, we can't be too careful. Just because some sensitive info, whether it's accurate or not, is available elsewhere on the internet or wherever else, doesn't mean it should be openly available here too (or on any LE website or section of a website). I don't believe in making things easier for those who prepare to do battle against us.
Many non-LEOs don't understand the nature/dangers of the job (even though some they think they do). Many non-LEOs give too much credit to LE/LEOs and not enough to BGs. Many non-LEOs don't know that active anti-LE types, from the worst gang members to protestors to defense attorneys, are always gathering intel to use against us. In person observations, TV shows, media/news, internet, you name it.
IMO, unless you're sworn or in a non-sworn position that actively assists LE/LEOs during the performance of our duties, there is no need for you to know our procedures and tactics. Period. All you need to do is be the decent productive members of society that you are, raise your kids properly, and support us in the performance of our duties instead of siding with the criminals and/or telling us how we should be doing our jobs.
If you want to know how we do things, join up or stay joined up. We can always use good people to hold the line with us. If not, don't be hurt if we don't tell you our secrets.

Again, I shouldn't have to explain reasons. Anyone with common sense should already understand. And it has nothing to do with "communist countries" or "totalitarian regimes" - don't be dramatic...i m all for leo safety.
But you don't seem to understand what that might entail.
i like leos i think they need to be backed up and supported as much as we can. although these comments- "Many non-LEOs don't know that active anti-LE types, from the worst gang members to protestors to defense attorneys, are always gathering intel to use against us. In person observations, TV shows, media/news, internet, you name it." true but to minimize this just give an explanation why it too sensitive to divulge.
You don't get it? Common sense. BGs train to counter our tactics, techniques, procedures, etc. You didn't read my football analogy?
when we ask about tactics for example in my case i want to know all i can so that the BG's don't have the upper hand when an incident occurs and, maybe i don't have the money to train or the time to search other places for info.
1. There are PLENTY of places you can go train or go look for info. 2. How we do things in LE is NOT necessarily the best way. 3. You don't have to (and many times, you can't or shouldn't) do things the way we do them.
we ask you guys because leos that are cgners are the best leos out there and we know you guys truly care about our rights.
We are Not all the best. Some of us are some of the best (not me - I'm mediocre). You DO have the right to seek out training and train on your own. You DO have the right to protect yourselves and your loved ones. You do NOT have the right to know how we LEOs do things.
if you feel it is unsafe just explain why we are big boys we'll understand.
Common sense. You should already understand.
and the part of "all you need to do is..." that makes me feel like im a child and you are scolding me.
Maybe it's You that has a problem with authority. There are going to be times for ALL OF US (LEO or not) when someone else is giving us orders and we need to follow them ASAP, no questions asked. As far as being productive members of society and raising your kids right - you don't agree with that? If you (in general) are NOT serving your country, your community, society overall - the LEAST you can do is to be a good person and raise your kids right. Most people are. Too many people aren't.
i am a grown *** man and when people ask questions all you have to do is not post; if your concerned for safety post a warning in the thread reminding leos of protecting themselves and other leos when divulging some parts of tactics.
I wouldn't have to explain or post further if people could grasp a simple concept - there are things you don't need to know. Likewise, there are things I don't need to know too - except I understand that.
imo that comment was too disrespectful we are not idiots or peasants. that kind of talk is very condescending.
Well, I'm sorry you took it that way. I'll reread what I wrote but I was only trying to state a fact - no condescension intended.
but safety is a priority just explain your reason's please we don't like walls thats why we don't live in communist country or totalitarian regimes.

I think most of the LEO's on this forum have no problem discussing tactics with non-LEO's, whether it is during shooting classes (ITTS is LAPD Metro stuff and FTA is a Huntington Beach SWAT officer) or in person.
I think the point isn't keeping stuff "super secret only LEO's can know" but more that we don't want stuff plastered on the internet to be viewed by who knows who.Comment

Good points, I was at some training today and we were talking about some aspect of less-than-lethal; stuff that should not be talked about on the net. It was a wake up call as some officers don't know when to shut up and certain things should not be talked about. I was thinking, holy sh*t, what if this dirt bag knew this or that in this situation!?
Some (most) aspects of our tools are better kept to ourselves.
No good can come from keeping our info/training under wraps but lots of bad can.Comment

I was browsing CGN today and came across this post.
Law Enforcement Officers for all intensive purposes do in fact have federal government and state government security clearances. As an example officers have access to information systems that military personnel do not. That is partially due to laws and regulations from state to state, training on the use of these systems, etc. I would assume that is the same for the military databases. But what I have heard is that just about everyone that enlist, is commissioned, etc. gets a security clearance. Mechanics in the military have security clearances.
As far as being law enforcement officers being civilian goes well . . . you kind of sound like the actors from Starship Troopers. But honestly what differentiates a law enforcement officer (civilian) to someone in the military? Law enforcements are protected in California by an additional set of laws/rights (Government Code Section 3300) like the military. Law enforcement officers and even correctional officers are at time under surveillance by opposing forces, have had improvised explosive devices employed against them, they have idiots shot at them, killed while serving the people, etc. and just like military forces they volunteered for the job. I know the hiring process is more selective for someone entering law enforcement than enlisting in the military (personal history statements, psychological examinations, etc.) Not everything that law enforcement officers do will go public and not everything the United States Government does will go public.
Also someone referenced the many law enforcement shows on television. I have the Military channel and the give out a lot of information on U.S. armed forces such as tactics, technology, and training. Most of the old training we’ve used is in fact based on military training but a lot of the newer tactics being used by the military have been perfected by law enforcement officers (With the exception of you MOH Tier 1 operators).
By the way I'm thinking of going through OCS for CID so my opinions will probably change in about a year or so.Last edited by red_star_republic; 10-16-2010, 1:56 PM.Comment

Was going through the post and did notice this. I'd like to say your somewhat of a special case where the technical information you provided helped a lot of people stay compliant with the labryinth of Fed/State firearm laws.
Any further technical info you provide is up to your discretion but it was greatly appreciated by me and others.Comment

Based on my knowledge, and personal experience, upon being appointed to a position (after lengthy personal history statements, background investigations, psychological exams, etc.) you have access to databases which you have to 1) Be granted permission from a State (CA DOJ) or Federal identity (FBI) to access them and 2) Enter a password. So how much more "security clearance" do you need?
