Point taken. I'm old school myself, already retired (best job in the world). Perhaps all LEO's on this forum should enter into an agreement not to reveal or discuss certain specifics of LE tactics, and make it one of the forum rules. I'm open for discussion on the matter. I myself, have often wondered why the civilian posters on this sub-fourm are desirous of this information.

yzernie, I don't believe anyone will "unload" on you as you have brought up a very important point. After reading this, I decided to reread my posts in that particular thread and found myself wanting to slap myself in the forehead for what I wrote. I guess 6yrs. retired has me slipping a bit.

I'm not going to put it out there for a vote or anything by the active/retired leos on this forum. As the moderator, I'm going to do what I should have had the sense to do when it was begun: delete it.

You were correct in this statement:

I think we get to chatting with each other and forget that it is open for everyone to see. I for one will be much more careful.

To the OP, very well put. As a rookie, I was also told about the three B's. I never fell prey to them, however I've witnessed several Officers, some good, some poor fall prey to them and loose their job.

I didn't post in the BUG thread and didn't read much of it. I do believe you are right about stopping to think about what we are posting and who has access to view it.

I do belong to another forum that has a special sub forum that has restricted access only to Military and L/E Operators where we can talk shop freely.

I've been giving this a lot of thought since last night, rolling it over in my mind so to speak.

Here's what I'm thinking: Some non-LEO's are just innocently curious about the things LEO's do, why we do them, and how we do them. That's fine on face value. But we never know the motive behind the question from an OP, or anybody else tht may just pop on to read it. I think as LEO's we have a natural inclination to help and provide information. However yzernie's point is well worth consideration. I propose that in addition to the 7 rules established by Kestryl for this sub-forum, that an 8th one be added. This would set ground rules for LEO's on what kind of enquiries to respond to, and when to stop. And for non-LEO thread starters and posters to realize that for Officer Safety, there are some issues by forum policy, we will not discuss.

My suggestion for a new rule is this:

"In the interests of Officer Safety, questions regarding how confidential information and intelligence is obtained and used by LEO's, Special Tactics, and certain specialized equipment issues, have been deemed inappropriate; as the LE community has no control over this information once it becomes public knowlege. The dissemination of such information could compromise security, and potentially place the safety of LEO's at risk."

Probably too wordy, but I wanted to cover all bases, and provide a justification for them as well, so that no featheres get ruffled.

What do you guys think? Am I being too cautious?

That is actually pretty well worded. I will run that by the boss and see what he thinks.

I think I was posting too much information also on the Calguns regarding my work at the office.

Plenty of guilt to go around here. That's why I'm yzernie brought up the subject, and why I've proposed some simple guidlines for us to fall back on, and for the non-LEO posters to understand why we just can't discuss them here.

I'm reluctant to have another rule installed and it was not my intent by posting the OP to make additional work for the mods. If someone poses a question that we (meaning us LEOs) feel should should not be answered due to potential safety concerns, we simply need to say we won't answer it because the answer would contain sensitve officer safety information.

Outsider opinion here, but I think yzernie's suggestion is a better option than to start making it forbidden for us to ask questions about topics that it's not against the law to know.

I agree that sometimes we try to be too helpful and forget about the bottom line, officer safety.

Just like in the field, we try to help and that sometimes gets us into trouble.

I did a quick search on Google and here is just one example of the information available from the internet (provided by the city)

So it would seem a certain amount of discussing tactics is a moot point in officer safety. Discussing more advanced tactics certainly has the potential to cause harm to a fellow LEO and I would agree with the general sentiment regarding the public sharing of information. I did not read the BUG thread referenced here.

I'm not a LEO, but I found it ironic that during my time in Iraq just about every Army FM or TM was available online for anyone with access to a modem... Surely, not everything is out there, but I'll be damned if a lot of the things we train were right there for everyone to read.

Nothing like letting a known enemy or an unknown enemy how you are likely to respond to a given situation...
