    Chino Prision Riot

    AP 08-09-09

And these are the people that the govenor wants to release back into our society, with less and less law enforcement.
Forty prisoners were sent to hospitals after a riot broke out at the California Institution for Men in Chino.

"Prison spokesman Lt. Mark Hargrove told KTLA-TV the riot started about 8:30 p.m. Saturday. He said the situation was under control as of Sunday morning. About 80 officers responded to the riot.

Hargrove says the inmates' injuries range from stab wounds and slashes to head trauma. Some injuries were considered life-threatening.

No prison staff members were injured.

The prison has seven units that house about 200 inmates each. At least one unit caught fire."

I used to live about 2 miles from Chino Prison in the 1980s. I was there when Kevin Cooper killed the Ryan family, which was about 4 miles from my house. Scary time then.

I went on a tour of the place in 1979, shortly after moving out there. While walking around one of the yards, with the officer, one of the inmates recognized me from Men's Central Jail in L.A. He said, "Get out of here L.A. County deputy sheriff and began walking toward me with an angry look on his face. About 5 other Hispanic inmates joined him. I told the officer to get me out of there fast; I was afraid I was going to be killed. No more tours after that.

My feeling since that time, is you couldn't pay me enough to work in the Correction system. The jail is a heck of a lot safer for the staff IMO since most inmates are just trying to get thru their case and not pick up any others.

The ones in the prisons with multiple life sentences have nothing much to lose if they attack an officer.

It would be nice if they feared the Mini-14 on the gun rail, but I suppose it's probably close to impossible to actually get the hammer to drop anymore.

                UPDATE

A state prison remained locked down Monday and more than 1,000 prisoners were being moved after a weekend riot that burned a wooden dormitory and left 175 inmates injured.

Saturday's fight at the California Institution for Men in Chino left 55 prisoners seriously injured but only 30 remained hospitalized Monday with non-life threatening injuries, said state prisons spokeswoman Terry Thornton.

Thornton said more than 1,000 inmates are being temporarily moved to other facilities because of damage to some dormitories, most of them to a vacant youth detention center.

The Chino prison holds 5,900 men but was designed for 3,000. Thornton said it's unclear what role overcrowding played in the riot.

"Overcrowding is a problem but to make the assumption that it caused this incident, I don't think you can make that assumption," Thornton told The Associated Press.

A prison spokesman said earlier that tension between black and Hispanic prisoners may have sparked the fight.

There were 120 prisoners treated for injuries at the scene and another 55 were taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, such as stab and head wounds.

Chino and nine other Southern California prisons were closed to visitors _ nearly a third of the 33 state prisons _ because staff from those prisons were temporarily shifted to Chino to help clean up the riot's aftermath.

Thornton said the fighting began at 8:30 p.m. Saturday and went until about midnight. However, staff needed until 7 a.m. Sunday to clear the last building, she said.

The outbreak occurred at a reception center that accepts new inmates and parole offenders being processed to be housed at the prison and sent to other facilities in the state, officials said.

Prison staff became aware of a plan to carry out a riot Thursday night, prison spokesman Lt. Mark Hargrove told the Riverside Press-Enterprise. The prison was placed on a modified lockdown, which included feeding inmates in their cells and restricting movement around the property. That lockdown continued until Saturday when the riot began.

Still, the inmates inflicted serious damage to the facility and one another.

Hargrove did not immediately return calls from the AP on Monday.

Curt Hagman, a state assemblyman for the district that includes Chino, believes the riot was a"coordinated attack."

"They all knew what they were going to do in starting a big brawl," Hagman told the Press-Enterprise. He added that inmates used improvised weapons and broken glass to stab each other.

The disturbance was the prison's most violent since a December 2006 uprising in which 200 inmates rioted for 90 minutes. That racially charged incident was touched off by a fight between a Latino and a black inmate.

It's all about control of the drug traffic in the prisons. Overcrowding is an excuse that liberals use.

i just can't believe Kevin Cooper is still living! We as taxpayers are still paying for his hotel lodging and food and accommodations.

Actually they dont have cable anymore, they have moved on to Satellite TV.

I have a friend who did 36hrs straight at the prison during and after the riot. He told me it was completely racial. Right now the prison racial problems are very difficult to deal with due to the overcrowding. None of the CDC officers were hurt because the inmates did not have any issues with them. Believe me, if they wanted to hurt an officer, they could have. Thank God that they only wanted to deal with each other. stay safe

i'm sure there there were some heated exchanges between the rival gangs. even name calling , ya think? sooooooo with the new "hate crime" enhancements will all the good folks involved in said riot be charged under the new law? just wondering.
