Front License Plate Infraction VC5200

My fine was $121.., but after I submitted evidence of the front plate they refunded me back $111 to my surprise..I thought the $10 was on top of the $121... so all in all I only had to pay $10 and I didn't have to get an officer signature. A photo uploaded online was sufficient.

Dumb question.

What is the consequence of just paying the fine and moving on with your life? Do you get put on double-secret probation when you?re pulled over again 3 years later?

Asking not because of front plate specifically, but for any number of items (tint, car registered out of state with driver that has CDL, etc)

I would guess the consequence is just $, but don't know for sure.

Fine amount(s). Each city or county may administer its fines and fees a bit differently. Where I worked, one city administered some of its not-having-2-plates-mounted violations and some others via its own system, the same as parking violation fines.

At county level, each line item, if signed-off went up to $25 per line item once corrected and signed-off. The fine, if not corrected, was ~$150 per line item. These citations were processed via California's county-assigned Traffic Court.

There is/was no protocol as to how many times a vehicle and its registered owner could be cited, whether it be one or more citations per hour or day. The vehicle merely had to be in a spot controlled by the Calif. Vehicle Code, e.g., parked on a city/county street/highway. A fix-it type violation could usually even be cited while parked and unoccupied.

If a person merely pays a fine and doesn't correct the cited infraction, a person takes the chance to be cited again. Depending on one's luck, the violation may never be cited again, but could even be cited more than once in a day.

Wow, for your example, so if un corrected and cited 10 times in 10 years (or 10 days, could happen), $150 each? No increasing penalty?

I mean, if a jackwad put limo tint on his fronts, it’s probably $75 each window already…

While there are some vehicle sections which might increase with the same violation had occurred within an expressly-stated timeframe, I cannot recall any such fix-it-ticket violations which have an increasing penalty due to frequency of being cited.

Please check out Vehicle Code section 24004. That's the primary tool used to deal with folks who have recurrent equipment "issues."

If a driver continues to operate (with an exception made for returning the vehicle to a residence, business, or garage) a vehicle that is either unsafe, or not equipped per the code, then section 24004 is violated. A section 24004 violation counts for "One Point" on a driving record.

In my early days in patrol there was one knucklehead teen who drove a very highly elevated mini-truck, that was both unsafe, and not equipped per the Vehicle Code. He made it a habit to show off to the other high school kids and that made him pretty hard to miss. Back then any peace officer could sign off a "Fix-it" citation without charge, and this kid apparently had a contact that was willing to do so. After about five instances of issuing the kid a "Fix-it" citation, the area deputies figured out what was going on and we started citing him for 24004 along with the equipment issues. By the time he figured out that 24004 was a moving violation, with points and fines, he had a suspended license and his truck went into a 30 day impound. We never saw him again.
