I?m surprised that no one has mentioned an option specifically allowed by Californian law. https://licenseplatewrap.com/

I have a Corvette, The state can stick it up their azz. Most cops and CHP i know say they don't bother on certain cars and in fact, if you pass the attitude test for a moving violation, they might just use that to give you something. Usually a warning.

I vaguely remember that there is also some CA-approved sticker-plate that can be used on the front to overcome the wind-drag properties of front plates...

Yup, here's a link I found that says it may be possible as a pilot program...

I initially did pay the fine - $121... but I took a photo of the fix...and they refunded me $111..

I definitely left the CA plate on the front.......

                      That is rare!
Tesla model S front plate mount is double sided tape, which everyone takes them off.
Model 3 and y doesn't even come with the mount attached on the bumper, but they give you one incase you choose to put one on.

In 2004, I bought a brand new Nissan Frontier.
                            They gave me the bracket.
I never mounted it, because I'm lazy.
When I sold it in 2019, I still hasn't mounted it.
                            Never got a ticket.
Went through several "impaired driver check points" in those years, never had an officer mention it.
Got a speeding ticket in it once at a speed trap (fought and beat it), officer never mentioned the plate.

Don't be a stupid, mouthy peckerhead at a traffic stop and you'll probably never have to worry about it.

That being said, if you don't mount it, it is a legal reason for a cop to stop you, even if you do nothing else wrong.

                            Your mileage may vary.

My vanity plate is mounted using this mount:
                              https://www.slybrackets.com/
If you already have that bracket why not just stick the official plate on it go get it signed off pay the 25.00 processing fee and be done with it?

Then you can simply put the other plate back on once completed.

Someone approached me to sign off a cite with a Tesla (which I did not), he told me he could not put a front plate because it would affect sensors for the auto pilot. I found that interesting. I don?t know much about those cars, but if those vinyl plates become a thing I guess that would be a great application for it.
