Red dot sight for duty/carry use

Do Your departments allow red dot sighs or actually issue guns with them on? Any good reason to stick with Irons?

I’m retired now but as long as we paid for it and could qualify with it it was our choice.

Most agencies on Lexipol will have a blurb in policy about optics/lasers etc. "on approval of range master/supervisor/chief" etc. for running optics.

For folks who have run irons there will be a learning curve required with time and effort spent by the pistol mounted optics user to get as fast with the pistol as they are with irons. The guys who commit, train and practice will be fast with what ever sighting system they have, irons or red dot. The guys who struggle or are problem shooters think the red dot will magically make them suck less...

My take away on pistol mounted optics is your body mechanics needs to be consistent to indexing the red dot in your view in order to approach identical speeds to traditional iron sighted pistols...this takes time, effort and practice.

You need to bring the dot into view in whatever position you are in 100% each and every time. Most new folks do "dot hunting" where they make subtle movements at the wrist to find the dot. The Holosun 507C-X2 ACSS may help folks make the transition (250 MOA outer circle to help find the 10 MOA chevron).

Many larger agencies run officers through a 2-3 day transition course. Personally I needed much more time with the system to get as fast as irons with a pistol mounted optic. Sig Sauer Academy runs "task condition standards" which are a series of activities on a shot timer where they recommend you meet/beat standard times in order to "qualify" using the pistol with optic.

You actually are picking up your iron front sight as soon as it is your field of view and that feedback allows you to correct aim almost without conscious thought. Iron sights do not require a lot of maintenance, just verification they are centered and tight and not occluded.

Optics require verification that the turn on, the windows are not dusty/dirty or broken, the emitter is not dusty/dirty occluded. Operators need to know how to run the gun when the optic is down/broken or occluded. The optic window/cover acts like a dust scoop as you carry it in a holster

The biggest benefit of pistol mounted optics is they are threat focused, you place the dot on the threat and all your focus is on the threat. Multiple shots on the dot are simple as you float the dot on the target with good trigger presses.

HP911 and I must work for the same agency. I already carry a personally owned p320x pro with romeo 1 pro. Best shooting duty gun I've shot (haven't shot a stacatto).

Red dots are the way to go for sure.

I decided to give RMR a try. Want to set up just one pistol with Trijicon RMR , back up sights , etc.

I have to pick between Glock 19/17 or one of the Sig P320 series pistols. I like both guns . Which one is better for using RMR? Or about the same?

Myself and one of my coworkers have spent the last two years working to get a pistol red dot policy/training program/etc put into place at our department. We've finally got everything finalized and are starting our mandatory 8 hour transition course this month. Basic policy requires officers to purchase their own firearm, holster, optic and suppressor height sights. A list of approved optics was put together including most of the major duty grade ones.

I personally went with a Glock 34 gen 4 (slide milled by Jager Werks) and Trijicon RMR type 2 3.25 MOA and standard black suppressor height sights. My partner went with same optic and gun (but Gen 5) with a CHPWS adapter plate.

I would say both Glock and Sig are about the same for mounting a RDS. It's really a matter of which pistol you prefer to shoot and which RDS you like to use. I can't think of a reason why any full-sized pistol would be inherently better for mounting an RDS--assuming they all had suitable RDS mounting options of course.

The Sig optic is patterned after the leupold delta point and their optics.

Glock has the different plates that will slow you to run an rmr or other. I am currently digging the Holosun optics.

Sig offers a complete package deal. P320x pro with romeo one pro. I've carried this for duty and love it. Battery changes don't require the removal of the sight which means I don't have to re-zero everytime. Already comes with suppresser height night sights. My p320x full size, optic, and 3 mags was $849 out the door at LC action.

My agency is issuing Glock 17 MOS with Holosun 508tx2. We torture tested both gun and optic with positive results. Department is in the process of writing a new mou for the red dot and training range instructors for the transition to dots

                              Good news on the 508tx2.

For the Romeo 1 I strongly recommend the Sig add on ($60) shroud kit. This should make it's housing fairly impact resistant.
