Hey Brett, AKA forklift232, Whitewater1914, EB91fwy, RapidCool, tbhRacing, Barncat, Taco Bandit, Desert Explore, etc. You ever going to get tired of being a wack-a-mole for Kes's Banhammer?

Probably not as someone who got fired from their job as a Firefighter & denied reinstatement and also being outed here on Calguns for Stolen Valor in claiming to be a former LEO, you are indeed a very twisted piece of excrement...

Take accounting if you want to lock people up. Biden wants to add nearly 80,000 IRS Agents.
If you are ready to retire in 15 years a career switch should not be in your future. I'd observe that would make you at least 40 years old which is the age when those aches and pains start. How are you going to feel after not running down some 15 year old you chased 4 blocks after he took a shot at you?

          A few thoughts:
-You will need to complete a POST academy - you will need some degree of physical fitness - circuit training & HIIT is currently in fashion. You should be able to do 8 minute miles. Plus you need to pass all of the academic "learning domains", arrest/control and firearms portions. You must pass everything - you have two attempts and then separation if you fail the second attempt.
-Make sure your immediate family is supportive, you will have 12-24 months of intensive job related activity (academy, field training and probation)
-Avoid bills, booze and poor/bad relationships
-Always tell the truth. In law enforcement you only lie once because then you are separated from the profession after the first lie. If you don't know say so and promise to find out the answer.

Working in LE is a calling. If you approach it as a job you'll be just another robot going through the motions.

The answer to your question has almost nothing to do with what anyone else says and everything to do with what you think. Like legal advice, internet forums are not a place to get the information to act upon where a life changing event follows.

You already know the answer and it isn't what anyone here is saying, all you need to do is take the time to recognize what you already know.

The fewer people you ask about your life, especially strangers the better off you'll be. Most advice found on the internet is from those who would never or have never done what they advise others to do. The rest of it pulled out of thin air.

It will be 23 years at the end of the year, 3 in uniform and the last 20 in investigations. Times have changed, especially in places like California with guys like Gascon that have turned the LA DA’s office into a joke. I have talked to a few LA DDA’s and their morale is worse than ours. The Feds are in no better place either, so we all lose.

About 11 years ago I had a boss tell me that our ultimate goal is to make it to the end and collect our pensions; now he was a nice guy but not much of a go getter, so I blew him off and continued to piss him off by doing my job and putting bad guys in jail. Now that I am 14 months from KMA, all I want to do is make it to eligibility. I still do my job, actually do it well, but do it smarter and unless it will get me or my partners killed, think about it a little more before I make a decision. Experience really comes into play now. With the political climate today, my professional liability insurance is all paid up and I am a hell of a lot cautious than I was 23 years ago.

To answer the OP’s question, it is ultimately your decision. We old dogs need young experienced people to step up and take our places because we are replaceable. After I retire there will be a few jokes and stories said about me but I will be forgotten like many before me. Just be advised that even though it has been said or joked that the old guys missed the good old days, the new times are quite different than previous generations and have a bit of uncertainty. But I will say that people in our chosen profession are good of adapting and overcoming adversity so why not.

The one good thing is that there is unprecedented hiring going on these days. There are long periods of time where no one is hiring and candidates may pass everything and still not get hired.

The flip side to that is that a lot of people are bouncing, not just retirees, but people who are frustrated with any number of political issues. The qualified immunity issue is a really big deal and may chase a lot more people out the door.

This is very accurate. I work in a pretty large agency (around 1500+ sworn) and it was unheard of for someone with less than 10 years on to be a "senior" in patrol, get specialty assignments like Detectives, POP, SWAT, K9, etc., but here we are.

I also have many friends of my academy or younger who have sought other professions, whether in LE or not, moved out of state, or have exit plans in the next couple of years or less.

A federal Special Agent (series 1811) gig is hard to beat. You will hit your salary cap (which is around $170,000 this year) eventually and the job is what you make of it. I would highly recommend looking at Secret Service if you don't mind traveling and can pass the poly and top-secret background investigation.

I would avoid any Office of Inspector General gigs or anything with CBP/Border Patrol or ICE Deportation Officer just for morale reasons. Federal probation officers have a good gig as well, but they are more administrative and less proactive than most county probation departments I have interacted with.

That being said, many people simply want to be a local cop/sheriff and aren't interested in a federal gig, go with what makes sense for you. Also, keep in mind that federal LE has an age maximum of 37 years and mandatory retirement at age 57. Everyone loves to stereotype the feds as having a stick up their ***** but, in my opinion, the camaraderie and support is much better than the PD I used to work for - much less office politics nonsense.

Somewhat true..It's not as hard as non-feds/or mil vets think..
The beauty of the feds is that once youre in the system...Youre in. The problem with an 1811 gig though is that most of these agencies require you to already be CITP certified, which your friend probably isn't.

Jump into the national guard or reserve as an MP. Apply for to some federal LEO gigs. You get the best of both worlds.

CDCR is another good option, if you dont mind the prison work.

Can always apply for CDCR. Pay is about the same as SBC and being a CO is a pretty chill job... if you can get past all the mandatory overtime. Their academy is only 13 weeks.

The job is barely recognizable after 40 years. I would not do it today.
