Been thinking about reapplying become a law enforcement officer about 7 years ago applied to LAPD got through 2 interviews but got disqualified for living with my father who is a felon. I now own my own home. And have been seriously Considering reapplying and trying again I just don't know it be worth it Currently 15 years away from retirement so there's that to think about. I live in apple valley so would prefer applying to sbc I know these arnt the best times for becoming a Leo
Would you guys still recommend making the jump or is it just not worth it

These are trying times for LEO, but that should be the most important factor in YOUR decision.

I very much doubt any LEO will make the decision for you in whether or not for you to proceed with a LEO career. You have to make that decision for yourself based upon what your needs are, what sacrifices you are going to make (there are many being LEO), what works with your home and family life, and the list goes on.

Law Enforcement can be a very satisfying career, but there are some that it just doesn't work out for. Being a LEO involves making a lot of judgement calls and decisions, some in a time period of one second. Luckily for you, your decision to pursue a LEO career doesn't have to be in one second. Weigh out the pluses and minuses of a career field that also affects your off duty lifestyle. It's not like working at a bank, where you get to leave work behind once you clock out.

If you weigh things out and determine that their are more pluses than minuses, then that should help you in making YOUR decision.

I would encourage you to look elsewhere, maybe Fire or something medical - especially if they get rid of qualified immunity in CA (or worse, nationally). This society is going to hell in a handbasket and unless the people steering the ship towards it (e.g. democrats, media, big business, etc) and the people actively paddling towards it (e.g. liberals, blm, aclu, antifa, etc) are REMOVED and SOON, we're fuc&ed...

I love the profession, and I encourage people to pursue it. You have to have the right temperament and be able to negotiate difficult situations. The biggest thing is off duty training. Most people think they’ll have a ton of time to train on the clock and that is false.

Be prepared for training and preparing to consume your life. If you’re well trained, act professionally and don’t get offended, everything will be fine. I don’t subscribe to the pessimism of today. All we need to do is make our stand every single day, train, and be the example. All evil needs to succeed is for good men to do nothing. If you’re a good man, we need you. Become a LEO and have a blast doing it. No other profession like it

I believe in aptitude tests. Some cops really suck and should not be on the job. When I joined the Marines, I took the aptitude test and they put me in the Military Police and I excelled at it. So I got out and went for the 'big money' as a CA cop. What a bunch of slackers in Civil Service and the 'Prieto Principle' is in play. 20% of cops do 80% of the work. So 80% of cops are lazy slackers. JMHO.

So I love the profession more than most cops because I demand high standards and 'straight arrows' on the job.

If you have a bachelor's degree, I would encourage you to look into a federal agency. Secret Service is literally ALWAYS recruiting for Special Agent. If you want something closer to a local PD job, I would look at U.S. Park Police (series 0083), they are starting a big recruiting push and have all the same specializations as a regular police department (motors, K9, detectives, etc.). A federal Special Agent (series 1811) gig is hard to beat. You will hit your salary cap (which is around $170,000 this year) eventually and the job is what you make of it. I would highly recommend looking at Secret Service if you don't mind traveling and can pass the poly and top-secret background investigation.

I would avoid any Office of Inspector General gigs or anything with CBP/Border Patrol or ICE Deportation Officer just for morale reasons. Federal probation officers have a good gig as well, but they are more administrative and less proactive than most county probation departments I have interacted with.

That being said, many people simply want to be a local cop/sheriff and aren't interested in a federal gig, go with what makes sense for you. Also, keep in mind that federal LE has an age maximum of 37 years and mandatory retirement at age 57. Everyone loves to stereotype the feds as having a stick up their ***** but, in my opinion, the camaraderie and support is much better than the PD I used to work for - much less office politics nonsense.

By the way...it is Pareto Principle, not Prieto Principle. You even put it in quotes which makes your fail so much more fail.

Parieto, an Italian economist, came up with it but it's called the Pareto Principal. It was originally applicable to the economy, stating that 20% of the people owned 80% of the nation's wealth. It has since been applied to other fields and as you said, it's "JMHO."

I'm coming back to EMS after a 20-year break. I worked very occasional shifts for a while. But I'm going to be back on a regular part-time schedule because my corporate job took away all my overtime. It'll be interesting to see how it has changed.
