What were LEO/FLEO exempted from? Could individual officers/ agents still buy standard capacity mags or did the purchase need to come from a department?

In 1998, I bought a Glock 19 for duty use. I needed a letter from the department on letterhead stating the firearm was for work. It came with three 15 round magazines which were marked “law enforcement use only.”

I needed new mags for my P226, no one local could get them. Had to be ordered direct from Sig. Needed letterhead from higher ups, took a couple months to finally have them delivered. It was a major PIA.

What the future holds no one knows, IF you think you may need it get it now, or at least get it on order.

I remember between about 2001-2004 it was a confusing process just to acquire additional 15 round Beretta 92 magazines. And I do have some that were stamped “LE only.”

G19 is one of the best all around pistols ever made. I’d try to get one even if it was spendy.

Yeah, no way I'm paying calguns marketplace price for a 19. No glock is worth what the off roster sellers are asking. LEO to LEO at a fair price, sure. CGN new in box off roster price, no way.

Unless something has changed no letter is needed for a cop to buy mags over the counter. Police ID only. Letter was for the off roster gun and or not having to wait the 10 days. If you are buying from the manufacture they may want the letter for CYA. That was the way it was when I left CA three years ago.

That is what is required under current CA laws.

The OP was asking what was required under Federal laws from 1994-2004.
Under those Federal laws/regulations, a LEO had to present a LE agency authorization letter from their LE agency, which would allow them to buy large capacity ammunition feeding devices for duty use only from a FFL dealer.

I still prefer Glock 17 personally. However, I bought 2 Glock 19 Gen 4s when my daughter graduated the academy. I gave her one and kept the other. They are consecutively numbered, so it will stay with me for a while. Maybe I will give mine to my son-in-law, since I got a Glock 19X now.
