    Outer vest carrier

Whatup yall... I'm working on an outer vest carrier proposal for my department. We currently wear concealed armor under our uniform shirt. I'm looking at carriers with molle webbing to attach radio, mags, cuffs. Etc...

Would anyone here be cool with sharing their department proposal/staff report that got approved?

I have have already started mine and I included data from the study performed at university of Wisconsin, just curious if there's other data out there that I may have missed. Thanks

Thank you. If I get preliminary approval I will let you know. I have holster for radio and mags but not the others.

Several articles on PoliceOne open to the public comparing outer carriers, panels and a how to buy guide with specifics.

To be more specific, my admin is hung up on what they say are safety issues related to the outer vest. There are videos of officers being drug by the vest and they want that addressed. Nothing in the articles I have found so far have anything specific to that. I'm wondering if anyones dept study or policy found info related to officer safety

So I am guessing that your officers normally go topless? No shirt that they could be dragged by?

That's the same argument we have. Anyone can be dragged by a limb, shirt, belt, etc. I don't see how the outer vest presents any more of a risk.

Officers these days have so much gear hanging off their bodies anyway, how is the addition of an exterior vest going to make a difference? Unless it's all carried concealed.

Honestly, I don't know how they can sit in their cruisers all day with all that gear on.

I'm already uncomfortable at shooting matches, just driving between stages wearing holstered gun and magazines.

It's not. Over the years the demand has changed... Just think of what was on the belt 10 to 20 years ago vs today. But i need to prove that the outer vest is not more of an officer safety challenge which is turning into a challenge because I cannot find anything online or from speaking to agencies that it is a liability.

Right now we carry the following on our belt: Gun, mags, baton, taser, radio, OC spray, TQ, and Handcuffs....which is all mandatory.

While the biggest and most common denominator in saving officers and their respective agencies from 4850/back claims is physical fitness, there's still something to be said about carrying around a 20 to 30 pound duty belt.

It just doesn't make physical or anatomical sense. Being able to put some of that weight helps redistribute and forces the officer's core to be in shape rather than tiny back muscles.

You said it yourself, it's already uncomfortable for you to just carry your shooter's belt. If you were forced to, would you rather have it on your vest or your belt?

That's cool the TQ is mandatory. Ours is only optional.

Mandatory for us is gun, mags, cuffs, radio, and at least one less lethal option. Sounds cool and light, but they are quick to give us a D/C or roll up to another division/assignment if we carried the bare minimum and weren't prudent enough to carry more force options.

It's like pieces of flair at Chotchkie's. Do you want to be like Joanna or Brian?
