Shuffle steering

I do my best to practice shuffle steering but more often than not I drive only with my left hand

My stepdad was an instructor at Pomona for EVOC in the 90’s and I remember my mom used to get annoyed when we would go some where and he would drive,for whatever reason it bugged her to watch him shuffle steer. I miss the days of going to the yard on the weekends once in a while and taking a radio car out on the track.

Shuffle steering has its place on the job. However, when the trainee has a poly jacket and is going to a alarm call, it gets annoying real fast.

Not a Leo but an Engineer, the guy that drives the fire engine and truck for a large department here in SoCal. I also teach at our Engineer Academy. I teach shuffle steering for two reasons. One its a smoother way to drive especially when you have 4 guys In a rig, driving a rig that weighs anywhere from 40k to 90k lbs and with 500 gallons of water sloshing around in back. Think about when you normally drive your personal car, when you make a turn and you're driving out of it what do most people do? They let go of the wheel and let it straighten out and then catch the wheel when straight. That abrupt grabbing of the wheel depending on how fast you are going stops the momentum of anything else in the compartment people included. This throws your passengers around. You may not feel it as the driver but they will.

But mainly it forces you to drive slower. You can't shuffle steer as fast as you can one hand it so in order to make a corner you have to slow down or you will under steer. It's something that's great for new drivers. People will say race car drivers never one hand steer but they usually never have to make the 90 degree turns or the steering ratio is greater so that you don't have to turn the steering wheel as much to get a corresponding turn of the front wheels.

It works on turns with ideal high-low-high apexes and you're moving well enough for caster steering to kick it. Not so much for tight, low speed turns. I do find that I do it in my personal vehicle because it's kind of fun. If it was in a car with super short turning radius, probably not ideal.

What you are all forgetting is that the technique was taught when cars did not have power steering. Yes, I am that old.
