    Shuffle steering

What are your thoughts on shuffle steering? They have us do it at EVOC and say it should be used all the time.

I'm curious as to your guys' thoughts.

If driving on the street ya go for it. No big deal to drive with your knee as long as your eyes and brain are doing their job. If on track NO!!

i really only shuffle steer when I’m at work because of my vest. When I used to autocross, I can’t ever really remember shuffle steering. If I did, it was pretty minimal.

If you’re in the academy, do what they tell you. When you’re out working on your own, whatever works for you.

I didn't really care for it, but had to do it to pass evoc.

It takes time to get used to but once you do it helps. I spend a lot of time driving fast in dirt and as a result my patrol truck does slide around. Shuffle steering is smoother with less over correction. I thought it was dumb when I was first taught it but I have become a convert.

I'm a fan of shuffle steering when it's appropriate. It doesn't work for me for tight, slow-speed turns. Taught it to my wife and daughters.

I didn’t know there was a term for that. I thought it was just called steering.

Not LEO, and I learned to shuffle steer back in the mid 1960's, while autocrossing. At first I only used it on the track, but one day I thought I give it a go everyday. It was difficult to fully make the transition, however, I'd say it was a good move on my part. I "feel" more in control all the time, and it is efficient. Just my 2 cents!

Hands do not crossover, right stays on right side of the wheel left on left. Shuffle up and down to make your turns, works better for some then others has its merits when you are wearing a vest and or other kit.

Hmmm.....I thought it was sawing at the wheel a little bit near the edge of traction.

I do both if the situation calls for it.

One reason that it's popular in LE is that it keeps the microphone cord from being wrapped around the steering wheel in pursuit situations.

It feels awkward at first, but I am doing it all the time since I learned it at EVOC over a decade ago.
