Does your dept issued AR have an ambi safety? If they do just build a featureless rifle that mirrors the dept issued one and add a kydex grip wrap. Like phroggunner said the manual of arms is the same and you're getting reps with manipulation skills. You may even prefer a no-thumb grip-i find it more ergonomic sometimes.

Like someone else said, if you're going to a properly vetted class you can ask to borrow a rifle from the range. If you work where i think you work it's been done before.

I've seen CHP guys running "A2" rifle set-ups @ frontsite. Mock up your set-up just as an agency gun and then train like you mean it. Plenty of "tactical" courses out there from beginner to high-speed, even some LE-only classes on LE ranges.

I agree with 1911SU's suggestion. Check with the rangemaster and see if there is a policy on checking out long arms for training purposes.

Also, maybe ask if your agency has a "Specialist" program of some type.

Why would a department gun be featureless? Wouldn’t your department gun be a AW in the standered configuration.

For me, its a toss-up whether to have a featureless AR or fixed mag / mag-lock AR that you would then be able to use out-of-state when needed.

With the featureless option, the pro is that while in-state you can use hi-caps and practice fast mag changes. The con is the featureless features don't resemble the feel or function of your issued AR (particularly the grip), which you still have to deal with if you go out-of-state, unless you want to spend the time & trouble of changing stocks or stock lock parts & the grip or grip wrap for a class once you cross the border & change it back before going home.

With the fixed mag / mag lock option, you're stuck using only 10 rd mags while in-state, & having to open the action at each mag change (or topping-off with an ejection port loader). The pro is that when travelling out-of-state for a class you only have to unscrew & remove the mag release button & catch assembly (as long as it isn't loctited in) & replace with a standard button & catch assembly & you're good to go, with all the usual features.

On my LWRC-DI fixed mag /mag-lock AR all I have to do is unscrew a .050 set screw just above the mag release button, remove a small pin & spring (that locks the mag release button when the action is closed) & I'm good to go. The mag-lock function is milled right into the lower. The hex key for the set screw stores in the Magpul grip.

The fastest method would be the two upper option mentioned above.

Go to www.lmsdefense.com. Check out their schedule. They have regular classes all over and at their facility in Nevada. Its run by Josh Jackson, a northern Ca dept cop. I have taken 11 of their classes. One word-Awesome! I am not a cop, but I worked as a correctional officer for 27 years with El Dorado Co so I have been around this sort of thing enough to know when a training company knows how to deliver. The best way to put this is, during a class at Ione range, I was the only shmuck running a bullet button and 10 round mags. But hey have high speed classes just for law enforcement and military at their facility in Fernely NV. They have a over night class on a huge open range in Hollister as close as you can get to military training without being in the military.

A buddy of mine has suggested LMS as well. I'll have to look them up and take some this year.

Some POST academies have spare ARs to let you borrow to participate in their carbine training courses. Just call and ask.

If you are doing a POST class at SACSO on your own dime, but using a department weapon, hit up your firearms coordinator/range master and advise him/her of the situation.

If one of my officers did such and could provide me with the paperwork, I would supply department ammo to save the officer some money. This is a win win situation for both the officer and the dept when it comes to sharing the financial burden.

Then again, with my officers, I try to do them one further by either comping their time or keeping him/her on pay status during the course. But I understand each dept is different and their may or may not be a budget or staffing strain at the time of the course.

Please hit up your supervisor or firearms coordinator to see what they can do to comp you for attending a carbine course.
