Currently have a Pelican 8060. Love it and use it nightly. Looking for a smaller (handheld) flashlight as a back up to carry. I had a Surefire protac, but wasnt enough light if the big one went down.

Any recommendations for lights about the same size as the protac?

My handheld is a Surefire P2X Defender Fury. Taken quite a beating and around 600 lumens. That’s my “dimmest” light.

I use fenix pd35tac everyday. it has not failed me. small, rechargeable and 1000 lumens.

I've been using a Klarus XT12 for years. Replaced my streamlight and never regretted it. Small enough it lives on my duty belt. Amazing output. Rechargable. Dropped it on concrete thousands of times. Has survived years on patrol plus a year in Afghanistan.

I actually have one of those but its not my favorite. Dont like that it doesnt have a built in clip and not a fan of the "belled" light.

Check out the malkoffdevices lights, made in USA, great quality, reasonable price (more than Chinese but hold up better a, especially if dropped in my personal experience) a little less expensive than equivalent surefire and can get choice on different degrees of spot or flood and "warm" versus "cool" LED colors. Lumens is not the only measurement you should have in mind, Lux (i.e. brightness, not total light) is also an issue. my personal edc is one of the MDC lights that uses a single RCR123 that is 800 lumens momentarily, 700 lumens for 8 seconds then down to 200 lumens thereafter, a LOT for a single 123 size cell light. Also uses 123 but not as bright. This light is medium range, sort of floody, great for close range.

Malkoff also has narrow beam lights that reach out a good bit more that fit 1 or 2 cell pocket type light format. Malkoff also makes replacement/upgrades for a number of older surefire bodies.

The official usage is 1.2 hrs on turbo, but that's not entirely accurate. After 5 min on 'turbo' it steps down the lumens slightly which prolongs the battery somewhat. Also depends how you use it; I use full lumens on approach, it really lights up the interior of a car and cuts through tint well. Once I'm back scratching a tag or whatever I'll click the "mode" button on the bottom and toggle to a lower lumen setting so I don't blind myself. I know it last longer than my streamlight strion or SL 20X lasted.

I also like how it's a really good blend of flood and throw. It'll light up an alley or field, but also throws a beam a good distance.

It also will use the standard CR123 batteries. I usually carry a few CR 123 in my bag just in case I get stuck out somewhere and my battery dies. However working patrol graveyards I'd sometimes forget to charge it, and I could sometimes go 2-3 shifts between a charge.

Another feature I really like is the strobe. The light has a forward clicky on the tail cap to turn on the light. There is a second button on the tailcap that is the mode switch. When the light is on, you click the mode switch to cycle through brightness levels. When the light is off, pushing the mode switch will activate the strobe as long as the button is pushed. Hold the mode for 3 seconds it turns the strobe on. The strobe has a fast/slow strobe pattern which grabs your attention very well. When I'm in traffic lanes at night on foot, I'll turn on the strobe and keep it pointed at the ground as I'm doing whatever, really keeps me visible. Or if I'm on unlit road, I'll flash the strobe at an approaching vehicle, they'll see me from a 1/2 mile out and be nice and slow by the time they get to me. I've used it to signal a medivac LZ.

The charging cord plugs into any USB, and the charging end is magnetic. I keep an extra charging cord in my bag for extended deployments, you plug it onto the cigarette light, stick the magnetic end to the side of the flashlight, and it'll charge.
