I was in the class right behind Ron, although I was not a Deputy.LASD Class 190, August 4, 1978 to December 1, 1978.
Class was 100% LASD, no outside agencies. 89 deputies graduated. Two are still working. One is a current Assistant Sheriff and the other is a K9 Handler who had to get special authorization and medical clearance to avoid the mandatory age 60 retirement. Commanders and above just need permission from the Sheriff.
Sergeant: November, 1990
Lieutenant: March, 2011
Retired: March 30, 2011
LASD Class 191 started 9-11-1978. I think our graduation date was January 5th 1979.
I retired in December of 2006
Some of us lucky few were able to go at age 50..... I can't imagine working past retirement age.. The risk of getting injured go up dramatically every year after 50...Last edited by SVT-40; 08-24-2017, 10:19 AM.Poke'm with a stick!

Sooooo, if offered the position of Asst. or UnderSheriff at age 55 you'll refuse and retire.
Ya gotta accept that for at least a year for pension if an "A" or 3 if a "B" I would think.
LASD Class #180, summer of 1976. The class after us was lucky enough to wear long sleeves. This academy was at BC in the trailer with window a/c, not the former high school with central air the OP talks about. The a/c, with one exception, would mysteriously stop working after lunch during 95+ temps. The exception.....the a/c machines in the back where the D.I.s sat. They never stopped and the air was always ice cold. Funny how that worked. They did always tell us that maintenance was going to look at it. I think maintenance may have glanced at the a/c units as they walked by the trailer, but that was the extent of it.
Ron knows what I'm referring to for at least part of academy since he began in August. I usually referred to mine as the "man's" academy when speaking with newer male deputies just to pull their chain. It always got a rise out of them.
