I'll start. LASD academy, Class 278, 02/1992. I was not a tan and green, I was a PA.

We all came to fear the "corner office", because you just never knew. Once during a lecture, the back of the classroom had so many recruits standing, there was no more room. The lecturer politely suggested a "coffee break" to everyone's relief. That office with the one way glass gave more than one of us nightmares.

Last year on Black Friday we were pinned down in the food court by mobs of overcaffeinated whirling dervish-like soccer moms who went full beast mode as one doorbuster deal after another went dry. Preparing a last ditch defense while human waves of shoppers advanced on our position to the sounds of light Muzak was surreal and terrifying. My back up requests were denied and we were ordered to hold our position at all costs. Seeing the fear in the eyes of my fellow mallcops, I feared they would waver and collapse into retreat. Mounting a nearby pop art display, I disregarded personal safety and motivated my men with my second in command next to me.

Earthquake!
No Captain.....Shopper formations......

"HOLD THE LINE BOYS!!"

"This is where we FIGHT!!"
This is where they D... Err Return to their minivans and LEAVE!!
"Remember this day, for it will be yours for all of the remaining holiday season!!"

5 minutes later, it was over. We had seen the elephant in Yoga pants, and it had been defeated. We let out a battle cry.... Huzzah...Huzzah....Huzzah. We feasted a warrior's feast that day... Orange Julius, Hot Dog on a Stick, the works.

And so it was for us, we merry band of brothers in retail arms.

Class was 100% LASD, no outside agencies. 89 deputies graduated. Two are still working. One is a current Assistant Sheriff and the other is a K9 Handler who had to get special authorization and medical clearance to avoid the mandatory age 60 retirement. Commanders and above just need permission from the Sheriff.

Lieutenant: March, 2011
Retired: March 30, 2011
