Me and my friend are thinking about joining LAPD together and since we are going live together for prob the first year (Seperate rooms of course... I mean if anybody ever thinks..m..we are firemen...no).

Was wondering what are the chances of us becoming partners or working the same shift?

    Ok. 8000 to 1
    Some little background.
My friend is a military reserve with health science AA
and I got an AA and BA in criminal justice

I heard couples cant work together in the same department? Is this true for best buds?

That should be on your list of priorities right above "what type of pistol do I get?"

There are couples that both work for LAPD and LASD fwiw. I'm not sure about them working as actual partners, but definitely in the same department.

You should be worried about a WHOLE LOT MORE than who your partner will be. Like getting hired first. Then making it off patrol training. Then becoming a solid proactive cop. Then you can worry about playing "Cops and Robbers" with your Little Buddy.

In case you didn't catch it, your question is insulting.
Knives don't stab people, cars don't drive drunk, eating utensils don't make you fat and pencils don't mis-spell words.

Never asked about being partners. Just wondering if its possible to work the same shift together because we only have one car and the recuiter did not answer our question. Simply just avoided by saying couples cant work together... Also we lice in glendale as you might know of. Im not even paying the rent

"Was wondering what are the chances of us becoming partners or working the same shift?"

With 9,000+ officers across 21 patrol divisions pm rotating shifts...slightly more than zero on a regular basis.

Well to put it bluntly the answer is 99% chance no. When you finish up the academy, everyone in your class will be given a slip with the top three choices of which of the 21 divisions you would like to go to. However, that is just a wishlist and does not guarantee that you will be sent to one of those division for probation. More often than not, assigned divisions are assigned based on needs and in the case of the probationers, the ability to have a training officer for every probationer sent to that division. Then once on probation you will need to work with a training officer for the first 6 months. During this time its highly unlikely that you will have much contact with anyone other than yes or no sir. Then once you are done with your first 6 months of probation, likelyhood is they will set you up with other training officers or tenured police officers to keep your *** out of trouble and to continue to teach you. So with that being said, you might you get the same division...possibly. Will you get the same watch....probably not. And if you manage to get the same patrol division/same watch the likelyhood of getting off at the same time is pretty much zero especially at busy divisions as you will work overtime almost everyday. This is especially true as a boot since you have to learn all the paperwork associated with the different calls you will be dealing with and the different arrests.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Instead it may be advantageous to focus on getting through academy and fto then gaining friendships with your coworkers you gain at your station you are assigned to.

Just work on getting hired. The question wasn't insulting in the least. It was a simple question by someone who doesn't know who law enforcement works. Why so many cops are overly sensitive is beyond me.

Couples married and not, do work for LAPD. Some work the same division.

As far as working the same division and watch together....yes it can be done.
After you finish probation, you can put a transfer in for the same division your bud works. Once it's approved you would have to put in for a watch change to match his.

Then it's the luck of the draw if you get put in the same car. Of course, if you are a good productive cop it helps. And have a good rapport with the W/C, and your den sergeant.

Of course this will take time.....

+1. To seasoned LEOs the question seems rediculous but i remember being a fresh boot and wanting to get gired with friends. With the amount vacancies needing to be filled in our jobs and the.. well... "talent" (if you can call it that) that are currently applying i think we should be welcoming to anyone who has sincere interest in our career field.

When I got hired by my 1st agency, I was excited because a good friend of mine (military) got hired with me. We went through the academy together, worked the jail together, and eventually went on patrol at the same stationhouse and shift as each other (beat partners). Now my old department certainly was not as big as LAPD or LASD, however we still had 700 sworn. And although i met some good guys and made new friendships, It was amazing to get to work beside my friend.

Like many have said, focus on getting your foot in the door with ANY department right now. You can always lateral to a different department later if you want, thats what I did. After that pass the academy and actually learn, listen to your FTO and volunteer for any call you havent done throughout the entire FTO process (FTO seems long but it never fails that the moment you get off training, you get the call you never got on FTO). Once you pass probation you can focus on ammenities but until then just work on job security.

As far as transportation goes. All i can say is you better go buy a POS $500 bucket instead of carpool. Reliablity and a form of transportation is something any department will ask for and i highly doubt anyone will hire you if you dont at least have a car. Good luck pal.
