Per policy, LA does not authorise off duty carry. This does not matter, as this has been litigated for over 25 years. Per AG opinion 89-505, the chief probation officer cannot prohibit off duty carry and we are not required to get a ccw. This opinion was referenced in many cases which created case law. All you have to do is take the 24 hour pc832 firearms course on your own and then qualify quarterly. No ccw permit needed. Your probation id that states you are a duly appointed peace officer under pc830.5 is all you need.

This link has all the case law and has a pretty good explanation of off duty for POs.

Thank you, sir. I sincerely appreciate your help. Unfortunately, I've already acquired my CCW permit from OCSD. However, I will still look into the quarterly training. Range time is always good anyway.

Do get training from Massad Ayoob, Thunder Mountain, Gunsite or another. Because you are a lawman you need to be train to be a gunfighter. You never know when you will have to deploy the final option. I still have a CCW and I am on the range every month with a minimum of 100 rounds downrange.
