    LEO/ CCW Permit Personal Weapons

I'm an active peace officer and decided to obtain a CCW (multi-State) permit for a couple of personal handguns. Did I just waste personal financial resources for doing this? Is my shield and ID enough to allow me to carry concealed with personal firearms? Just curious...

You need to do a bit of reading relative to LEOSA (HR218). Qualified Law Enforcement officers have the legal ability to carry a concealed weapon nation wide, including all US possessions and territories. No need or requirement for any sort of CCW as long as you are a "qualified" LEO as identified by LEOSA.

        Probably.

If you meet the requirements of LEOSA, that is a much more encompassing privilege than is a CCW permit.

There are only two potential advantages that come to mind for the CCW:

        1) Depending on the issuing agency, you may have a more lenient requalification process.

        2) Some states waive the waiting period on purchases if you hold a state-issued CCW.

          Here's the twist,

          PC 830.5 Sworn
Not armed while on duty as my assignment is in a detention facility.
POST Training did not include firearms training.

Get real familiar with 830.55, that should be the right PC for you.

You only took the PC832 Arrest & Control 40-hr portion, correct?

It doesn't sound like LEOSA covers you since you are not authorized to carry or required to qualify regularly with firearms by your agency.

Your agency should be able to advise you specifically. The majority of IDs I've seen will notate the PC section authorizing powers and whether or not the individual has carry powers. That's not to say that all agencies do this.

                That changes things a mite,

Please go back and read the first seven words of the second paragraph of my previous posting.

So it may have been a good call on the permit. I was just curious if it was a good decision on my part to pay for the fees and go through all the hurdles.

Read this article. It will clarify a few things for you.

As far as I know, correctional officers are not covered by LEOSA. It's unfortunate. I believe that C.O.'s should be.

Good read! Thanks. Because we are not issued a firearm and that the performance of my duty doesn't require me to utilize a firearm, that is why I chose to obtain a CCW permit. These guys are in my face most of the day and are quickly released back into the community. Threats multiple times a week lol. I just want to ensure that I will be able to protect my family when out and about and if in case a bad contact occurs.

Does LA Co Prob officially even let their people carry off duty at all? Or is it a gray area in policy?
