Decided to go used rather than new for my next vehicle. Anyone know where to pick up a decent Crown Vic with maintenance documentation, etc.?

Crown Vics
That's a hard one. It's hard to put the words "Decent" and "Crown Victoria" (from PD auctions) in the same sentence. You need to find granny/grandpas civvie Crown Vic to get anything in decent shape. All the PD ones are tore up with usually 100k+ of hard patrol miles. We only turn them in when they too beat up to maintain (a la first gen Dodge Chargers suspensions...) or they reach the 100k to 120k mileage mark. Even the new Ford Police Interceptors (Explorers and Tauruses) are already starting to make their way to auctions now.sigpicComment

I was getting ready to lay down $45K for a new vehicle when I thought, "There are a lot of other things I could do with that money that would be a lot more fun."
That, and I'm a big guy (6'2" 270 lbs) who likes lots of room in a car, V8s, etc. The 2006-2008 Crown Vics are going for $3K to $6K, so even with some upgrades (sway bars, blower, etc.) I'm still way under $10K.
No car payment, insurance is cheaper, the list goes on.
I actually had a 1995 SHO Taurus that was off the hook... but that was a completely different car and motor (a 220HP Yamaha V6, I believe...)
This makes perfect sense. If I can find an original-owner or second-owner CV, that may be the way to go.That's a hard one. Try and find a Mercury Grand Marquis, same car, nicer interior and probaly never driven by anyone under 65 years old."We got too many gangsters doin' dirty deeds, too much corruption and crime in the streets. It's time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground...."Comment

If you get a used PD vehicle.... go for a captains car or a firefighters car.
The miles of wiring in a patrol vehicle is insane.
Dead batteries due to all the electronics are common while in service
The patrol cars are retired and auctioned for a reason.
Lots of old folks have the car... and have soft miles put on them...
The parts are so cheap on the crown Vic, it makes it a good choice for high school kids.... break a tail light, they are cheap... small fender bender... great crumple zones lots of space between the driver and the other car
Lots of room under the hood for the basic maintenance
If you drive a lot of highway miles, take a look at the AZ highway police. It was my understanding that they went to a taller rear end ratio... they gave up low end acceleration and got way better mpg at 75Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)
Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
