Not to thread jack but how about if the sticker is expired but registration is paid, but you haven't passed smog? I had that happen not too long ago, I am all good now but I was just curious.

It should show up as "reg in process/progress" on the computer. You can still be cited for 5204 CVC tabs not current, I don't think an expired reg cite will fly, as long as it show's fee's were paid.

For our county its a $25 fix it ticket. If its excessive and the officer makes it not a fixet ticket then its $295

In AZ the MVD is instant, so I can stop someone for expired AZ tags I asked them if they have the ability to pay the tags and direct them to the website to pay it. Once paid I go back to my car, re-run the plate, and it shows the now current registration.

Technically your registration is still expired. You haven't completed the registration process, you just paid the fees. I don't know if DMV still does it but in the past they offered a temporary operating permit to give you time to fix the vehicle and get it smogged.

I recently had this happen, my truck failed smog and the reg was due a week later. I looked on the DMV site and they do offer a temporary operating permit.

I also never mail in the reg anymore, I go to AAA and pay and get the sticker rright there, no waiting for the DMV to get their stuff together. Parking control will nail us in LA, even if the sticker isn't there because the DMV is slow.

I have a bad habit of waiting to the last minute on that reg renewal. Probably because I hate the thought of giving this state any money for anything. Especially their jacked up renewal fees.

Every vehicle I've owned I get the renewal notice in the mail a good 3 months before it is due. If you are a procrastinator and wait until the day of to pay and smog your car then you might get stopped.

One of our motor cops has cited for expired registration the day after it expired shortly after midnight. Driver tried to fight it and judge found the driver guilty.

Just like driving without a seatbelt, having tinted windows, no front plate, talking on your phone, etc... violations might seem minor and stupid, just be prepared to be hassled and accept the consequences for them.

Here's another question: Can 4000A be cited on private property? For example, the vehicle is in a parking lot. Can it be cited it or does it need to be on a public road?

Actually neither is the case.

A vehicle may be cited for 4000a if it found upon a highway or in a public offstreet parking area.

It may not be cited if its in a private parking area.

I find using the online service of DMV to pay registrations and get e-mail reminders helpful.
