If a person has an expired vehicle registration 3-4 days past due, do you stop and ticket? If so, how much is the ticket generally?

Question For LEO regarding expired registration

Legally yes you can get stopped but our agencies unofficial policy is at least 1-2 months. It's a fix it ticket. If you get it fixed and have the citation signed off then you generally only pay and admin fee for the paperwork which is around $25. If you don't show proof it was fixed the tickets can be anywhere from $128-$475 is the highest I've seen (repeat offender with a rolls Royce). The court ultimately set the price so it can vary.Comment

You may have received a cite for having the tabs displayed. It's an entirely different section from having expired registration. Not really sure though as I don't know what section you actually got cited for. You can't write an expired reg cite if their reg isn't expired. You can however give them a ticket for not having their tabs properly displayed if the reg is paid but the sticker isn't on the rear plate.Comment

The general rule, because DMV is so f-d up, is 60 days"A free people ought to be armed" George Washington, 1790
"Don't fire unless fired upon. But if they mean to have war, let it begin here" Capt. John Parker, 19 April 1776, Lexington GreenComment

A couple of days, the only way for the cop to know would be if he were to run the plate because he suspected something.
Remember, the tag says "SEP" and the registration expires somewhere between 9-1 and 9-30.
Just don't do anything to encourage a cop to run the plate and even if it's a Tackleberry who will write obstructed vision for a fresh bird drop, he won't know.- Rich

Huntington Beach is pretty bad, particularly if you are parked more than a millisecond after the start time for street sweeping day.
I did get pulled over at about 45 days by CHP on 395 coming back from Bishop.
I was current, but my tag had been stolen.
He ran the plate and it was reported expired, he lit me up, but by the time I stopped and he came up to the window he said that he had a follow-up that it was current, but had already lit me up.- Rich

You are probably right. I don't recall. I just thought it wasn't a "high-quality stop". I think it was the month after my sticker. I was surprised when the officer verified it had been paid and still cited me. I finally had to go into the DMV since the sticker never did show up.You may have received a cite for having the tabs displayed. It's an entirely different section from having expired registration. Just an FYI, after 6 months expired the vehicle can be towed (2651(o)cvc).
Expired but nothing else going on, I wouldn't personally write a ticket.Comment
