Question For LEO regarding expired registration

If a person has an expired vehicle registration 3-4 days past due, do you stop and ticket? If so, how much is the ticket generally?

Can't speak for everyone, but our unofficial policy was not to cite for less than 3 months expired.

Legally yes you can get stopped but our agencies unofficial policy is at least 1-2 months. It's a fix it ticket. If you get it fixed and have the citation signed off then you generally only pay and admin fee for the paperwork which is around $25. If you don't show proof it was fixed the tickets can be anywhere from $128-$475 is the highest I've seen (repeat offender with a rolls Royce). The court ultimately set the price so it can vary.

I appreciate the feedback. I have a buddy who's really struggling and so his registration is going to be a couple days late and he's worried.

I got cited when my registration had been paid but I didn't receive the sticker from the DMV yet. So no guarantees. Of course late registration is going to cost more.

You may have received a cite for having the tabs displayed. It's an entirely different section from having expired registration. Not really sure though as I don't know what section you actually got cited for. You can't write an expired reg cite if their reg isn't expired. You can however give them a ticket for not having their tabs properly displayed if the reg is paid but the sticker isn't on the rear plate.

The general rule, because DMV is so f-d up, is 60 days

A couple of days, the only way for the cop to know would be if he were to run the plate because he suspected something.
Remember, the tag says "SEP" and the registration expires somewhere between 9-1 and 9-30.

Just don't do anything to encourage a cop to run the plate and even if it's a Tackleberry who will write obstructed vision for a fresh bird drop, he won't know.

LA Parking Enforcement was chomping at the bit to ticket me last year.

I had an October sticker and had renewed on time but didn't change the stickers. I got a ticket on November 1st. Thanks, guys

I'm not a LEO, but can tell you from personal experience that parking enforcement will ticket you as soon as your tags expire. If you are in an area they patrol, be aware.

Huntington Beach is pretty bad, particularly if you are parked more than a millisecond after the start time for street sweeping day.

I did get pulled over at about 45 days by CHP on 395 coming back from Bishop.
I was current, but my tag had been stolen.
He ran the plate and it was reported expired, he lit me up, but by the time I stopped and he came up to the window he said that he had a follow-up that it was current, but had already lit me up.

Orange PD got my wife the DAY AFTER her tags were due even though she had paid but not yet received them.

You are probably right. I don't recall. I just thought it wasn't a "high-quality stop". I think it was the month after my sticker. I was surprised when the officer verified it had been paid and still cited me. I finally had to go into the DMV since the sticker never did show up.

Just an FYI, after 6 months expired the vehicle can be towed (2651(o)cvc).

Expired but nothing else going on, I wouldn't personally write a ticket.
