    Hawthorne PD

    Hi all,

Are any of you familiar with or serving with the Hawthorne PD?

The wife and I are considering a move to one of the nicer areas (right around Ramona), and I'd like to see if anyone has any personal experience with that area. A few family members have some concerns about the crime. I think it's perfectly fine all things considered, but between the wife and the soon to be addition to the family, I'd like to double check.

Always happy to pick up the tab if someone wants to talk this over in person.

    And thanks in advance!

    Hawthorne PD is rock solid.

Better neighborhoods to the south (Torrance, Palos Verdes Peninsula) and west (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach).

Alot of younger professionals are renting in Hawthorne due to the more reasonable rents.

Stay west of the 405 if possible, west of Inglewood Ave always. 120th st south. Look carefully, some of the neighbor hoods have deteriorated.

Try to find out where the local postal delivery folks drink after work. Best round of beers you'll ever buy.

"HUGE" doesn't even describe it appropriately. I'd feel sorry for anyone having to move and live in that city or Inglewatts (Inglewood). It's all ghetto. To the OP, think of your wife having to go to the stores and such around there. She will be victimized.

Move further south as already suggested like Redondo Beach, Manahattan Beach, Torrance. Stay F-ing clear of Hawthorne, Inglewood, Gardena, Carson and Lawndale. It's one thing to work for Hawthorne PD, but living there is like living next to watts in many aspects.

            Again, it's a G H E T T O.

Moving south or West is kinda difficult given the house prices and commute to West LA.

Here's the thing. Many 'bad' cities have good pockets and bad pockets. I'm currently in Culver City, which until relatively recently had quite a few bad areas. Hell, you look at some crime maps now and CC looks worse than West Hawhtorne.

East Hawthorne is a vastly different place from Hollyglen.

If anyone knows about the Ramona area specifically, I'd much appreciate a word.

Thanks for all the responses so far!

I work in the area as a Leo and would only consider living west of the 405 a couple of nicer pockets east of.

+10000000000000 but check the Hollyglenn/Del Aire areas as well. They're more like El Segundo east.

I grew up in Hawthorne. Lived there from 72 to 87. I worked there as reserve police officer from 86 to 96. I have many friends that still work the beat there.

It's changed a lot, and not for the better. It might appear cleaned up in some areas but trust me, you don't want to live there unless you move west of the 405. Unfortunately no apartments to rent west of the 405 in Hawthorne.

If you go South, move South of 190th and West Prairie. If you can afford it El Segundo, Manhattan, Hermosa or Redondo Beach and Torrance are far nicer.

^^^ If you can't afford the nicer places within the south Bay Area which have already been suggested and of which I feel your pain, may I suggest you move further east and commute like the rest of the people that choose not to live in a ghetto city? Even living in Burbank to the north of you is far superior than Hawthorne and isn't too bad of a drive, compared to commuting from Orange County, the San Gabriel valley or the inland empire.

^^^ Well "here's the thing." the only "pockets" in Hawthorne, are the ones filled with "pus." Let's suppose you found the one street in Hawthorne that's hypothetically, "good to live on," but it's surrounded by crap. Do you really want to live there still? Think of what you're subjecting yourself and your family to, if you have to shop and work there. How about people you care for traveling through there just to visit you? How about the schools there???? Would that affect your little ones if you make them attend there?

^^^ Well hell, I thought you were specifically asking about living in Hawthorne, not CC.

^^^ Ok, the BOLD emphasis in your quotes are mine....

I don't understand your question because you ask about living in that city which I have yet to find anyone so far claiming that it's a "good" city to live in. In fact, the responses given to you have been honest and very negative, when it comes to living there. Second, why do you reply back with your own answers to your own question, about living in Hawthorne? Seems to me you've made up your mind already and you're just looking in vain for someone to say, "gee it's not that bad living there, right next to Inglewood, Gardena, LAX and just west of south central LA."

Living in Hawthorne is a rat hole, plain and simple. If you sprinkle some sugar on dog feces, it doesn't make it taste any better. Likewise, saying "oh it's not so bad to live there" would be a lie. I worked in that general area specifically for 10 years and I'd never live there.

Now maybe you like the ghetto to raise a family, invite friends to drive through to get to your house, or have your wife shop and drive in the area as well, I just don't know. But if you don't care, I surely don't care either. But since you asked, we are honestly telling you that it is not a friendly place to reside in.

You ask about the "Ramona" area. Well a simple analogy would be like asking, what's "Lynwood" like?" I'd reply with, "it's walking distance from Compton." Now what? Does that make you feel any better??? I would hope not for your sake.

I'd rather commute for an hour or more to work, than live anywhere around LAX, Gardena or Inglewood. I wouldn't subject my friends and family to the crap that runs rampant within that city or the outskirts of that city.

That is the area west of Hawthorne Blvd, with El Segundo Blvd on the north and Rosecrans Blvd on the south.

We loved the Hummus House on Hawthorne and 122nd St. Of course Bluebird Liquor is in the area on the east side of the street and the best place to buy Lottery tickets in CA.

Looking at Zillow for Zip Code 90250. They appear to be 3 bedroom, 1 bath homes built in 1947. Some homes have had a second bath added. Lot of them appear not to have garages and parking in a driveway or the street. Prices are $450K to $600K.

I personally like the Del Aire neighborhood. Good luck in your search my friend.

I bought my first house in Hawthorne off of 140th just west of Ramona. Granted, I had two dogs who would let no one get near the door without jumping at the front window, but I never even locked my doors. This was 13 years ago, but my tenants now have still had no problems... For those of you saying Manhattan, hermosa, redondo etc. you must understand the price difference. Hawthorne IS improving in my opinion because most "normal" people looking to buy a home can't afford to live in those beach cities. The median house price in Manhattan beach is over 2 million. 2.9 I believe. So I don't know if this helps, but you have to chose between affordable/within your means, or ideal and beyond your means. Personally, I live in south Orange County now. Must more for your money and less anti gun folks.

I agree. I remember working patrol in the 90s at Lennox when the watch commander received an angry call from a realtor who was trying to sell a house in Hawthorne. A deputy allegedly told the realtor's prospective home buyer that he would NEVER live in Hawthorne or any of the surrounding communities. She was absolutely livid about losing the sale.

Back then (before Al Gore invented the Internet) a person could walk into the lobby of Lennox station and look at the crime board and see for themselves all of the robberies, burglaries, assaults and thefts that were committed on a daily basis. I still remember one year when there were about 60 homicides just within the areas serviced by Lennox station. Our reporting districts included Lennox, Lawndale, the unincorporated areas of Inglewood, Hawthorne, Gardena, and south Los Angeles.

As previously suggested, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and Torrance are very nice cities to live in.
