I agree. I remember working patrol in the 90s at Lennox when the watch commander received an angry call from a realtor who was trying to sell a house in Hawthorne. A deputy allegedly told the realtor's prospective home buyer that he would NEVER live in Hawthorne or any of the surrounding communities. She was absolutely livid about losing the sale.

Back then (before Al Gore invented the Internet) a person could walk into the lobby of Lennox station and look at the crime board and see for themselves all of the robberies, burglaries, assaults and thefts that were committed on a daily basis. I still remember one year when there were about 60 homicides just within the areas serviced by Lennox station. Our reporting districts included Lennox, Lawndale, the unincorporated areas of Inglewood, Hawthorne, Gardena, and south Los Angeles.

As previously suggested, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and Torrance are very nice cities to live in.

I had a very similar experience at Lennox. I was working the desk and received a call from a real estate developer concerning what was then a large parcel of land north of 120th at Western Ave. (Since developed into a housing tract consisting of Trojan Ave and Bruin St.). I gave him an assessment of the area based on crime stats, along with some anecdotes of recent crime reports in the area. He declined to purchase the property and the real estate outfit subsequently made a complaint. I received an invitation to appear before the watch commander and explain the basis for information provided to the developer. I walked in with about a three inch pile of call records and crime reports. That was about the end of it.

Areas like Lennox, Hawthorne and Lawndale have an incredible amount of really good people living there. If you could pick out one family at random from any of those places, I think that you would find them to be good neighbors. The problem is with the relatively few numbers of real knuckleheads in the area and the inability to really do anything to change their conduct. Couple that with some really high population densities and the unfortunate result is that you do create an area where its really hard to enjoy living in.

El Pollo Inka is truly an outstanding food spot,,,but it's not in Hawthorne.

Yeah, Inka is in Lawndale... on Hawthorne Blvd at 154th. Absolutely one of the best places for Code-7! There used to be a Turner's across the street and a few blocks down.

Yeah, I always found it amazing that just one house could have a dozen cars associated with it and even more people residing there!

El Pollo Inka is truly an outstanding food spot,,,but it's not in Hawthorne.

Did you ever get the T-shirt that LNX deps made that year??? It was a cartoonish picture of a radio car going airborne off a ramp over an RD map of LNX station. There were red stars for every location of those murders. The shadow of the airborne radio car was the image of the reaper. The top of the shirt said "10-33 GO!"

That was the best "unofficial" LASD station shirt ever made!!!!

City of Hawthorne

Sorry to say but Hawthorne isn't a place to live. I work a Black & White out of Lennox Sheriff Station for 12 years. Hawthorne is between Lennox and Lawndale I say go south young man. I could go on but what's the point of it,
