Add- This deputy is using the worst device on his face in this photo. Strapping a cotton wick to your face is very hazardous.

        .

It's not a cotton wick, it's a particle mask. Cheap, not great protection, but better than nothing. You keep repeating your "wick" line like a salmon swimming upsteam.
If you buy anything because it has "tactical" or "operator" in the name, we probably don't run in the same circles.

How about this. I've been on Hotshot crews, engine crews, type 2 IA crews. I have been doing Wildland fire for over ten years which isn't a lot but it's more than most. The Hotshields do work but only if your not planning on working or doing anything strenuous. They restrict your breathing too much, a bandana to be honest really doesn't do anything except make you look like a bagger. The cotton dust particle shields work for people who are not going to be right up next to the flaming front , but you won't see any Fire guys with them. Best way to deal with the smoke is to just try you best to stay out of the thick stuff, get some fresh air when you can, keep you AC running with it only circulating in cab air so you have a place of refuge. Other than that, suck it up, your in a fire area , people work in that stuff for up to 36 hours at a time with out anything. Deal with it
