If tanaka really had the "safety and well-being of his deputies" as a priority, why didn't he take a stand for the people under his command and admit he made the orders when they were inicted for following his direction? He sat silently and watched his loyal minions go up the river.

Tanaka is and has always been about himself. His arrogance showed when he lied on the stand stating he didn't recall or denying calling the shots. He has never been known for having a short memory. Anyone in the LASD for the past 10 years know Tanaka was calling all the shots. The leutenants and sergeants operating pandoras box called Tanaka directly. They didn't call the Sheriff, nor their direct supervisors, they called Tanaka. Another criminal goes up the river.....

Copy that Rick, thanks for the clarification. Ditto what you said about how people should be held responsible. All too often, people of high rank skate, people of a certain gender skate, people of a certain ethnicity/race skate, etc ad nauseam. All too often, it sure seems like Fair and Impartial just happen to be two words in a dictionary...

Years ago on a le website, I "spoke" with a retired LASD station DB Lt. He said when he was a sgt. at a certain station, Tanaka worked under him. The Lt. said Tanaka was promoted too fast in his opinion.

Speaking to that, a lot of us working during Baca's reign knew of the unwritten policy he had of fast tracking all Asians on the dept. Many Asians who were promoted absolutely deserved it and were good cops and supervisors. I know, because I worked with some. I also know of some who were promoted or received good positions merely because they were Asians. One in particular was not competent at all, but eventually made it to management .

One told me how after only 1 1/2yrs. at CJ, he received a call from the station Capt. and was told he was coming to the station on the next list (he had worked there as a LET at the Asian Center and as a reserve deputy later). He told the Capt. that couldn't be since there were deputies who had waited 5yrs. to get there. He was told by the Capt. that it was a done deal and he wasn't asking him (the deputy) To his credit, the deputy told me he didn't believe it was fair, but there was nothing he could do. That particular Capt. was vying for a higher position with Baca during his first run for Sheriff. He obtained it btw.

The story was this was done in order to obtain the vote from that ethnic group when he ran for Sheriff. There was a huge influx of Asians into the Idt. and Walnut stations areas once the Buddhist Temple was built in Hacienda Heights and he wanted their votes.

I never had contact with him and in retrospect, I am thankful he wasn't the Undersheriff when I was a sgt. at CJ; especially when I was the 3000 sgt. No "3000 gang" worked for me, I had a good crew.

Well, I can only give my opinion of him when he was WC at Lennox back in the 90's.

The 90's was a completely different era of LE. One could never compare doing today what was done back then. Times have changed and if he was a dirty 'mobster boss' and got caught, tough sh*t.
