My (fire) retirement badge comes with a light blue I.D. card that says retired. I guess I could have got my badge with number encased in lucite.
I had to sign for my badge at personnel like every other badge I was issued so I guess the county bought it.
Should work to get into Knotts Berry Farm at Christmas.

I went to Knotts Berry Farm a few years ago with a guy still on the job, and they said it was supposed to be free only for people who were active. They ended up letting me in with my retired ID, but it probably would depend on who you talk to at the gate.

Actually, I asked them specifically about it, and they said retired law enforcement is okay. I will try this year.

Badge encasement was very expensive, and my co-workers and friends paid for it. It includes my uniform badge, flat badge, last current ID and the old ID signed by Sherman Block. I will probably get it this week.
Evidently they have changed things since my two badges (deputy and sgt.) were encased in lucite/lexan? as I didn't pay for it. It came from Sheriff's personnel, so I will surmise the dept. paid for it tho I could be incorrect. I will also surmise Ron's has the same plus his Lt.'s badge in his.

Mine both have the same badge number. When I made sgt. I was given a box that held 3"x5" cards with a badge number on it. The names of the previous badge holder was written on each one. Since all of the "good" numbers were taken, I decided to stay with the same one on my deputy badge.

As I've said before, enjoy your retirement and relax before beginning any new job. Don't jump back in right away.

I am getting a lot of calls from attorneys who want to hire me as a defense expert. I told them I just retired and will take some time off.

Not really. I would have liked a new finish on it. I have a few that have battle scars on them.

Congrats! My flat badge simply says "retired" at the top. But my recently renewed ID card now says "Honorably Retired" across the top. My agency paid for the flat badge, BTW.

If I were you, I would not pass this up. I would not let this go by...this is rare.

                        Congratulations on your retirement.

When I retired, many years ago, I was issued a small, flat badge that had "Retired" on it and a new wallet for the badge. I carried it for a while but it became uncomfortable as the wallet got filled.

The city mounted my regular, full size badge on a nice wooden plaque. The badge was refinished and the battle scars were removed. It had my badge/employee number on it and still had the pin on the back of it. The plaque also listed my years of service and my FTO tab but was missing my "10851" award. I was also issued a "Retired" ID card with the CCW endorsement on the back.

A few years back, the then Chief sent a letter to all Retirees that they should not carry their badges - only their ID cards - based on the State Attorney General's opinion.

I wonder why you cannot carry the retired badge. Maybe someone played a cop with it.

The personnel said I can have my pin on badge so I ordered one. They said it will have my service dates and something in the back of it. I am waiting for it now.

This all started in 2007, when someone misused a "honorary badge" that was issued by a California Sheriff. After receiving the AJ's opinion letter, our then Chief sent out the letter to Retirees instructing us not to carry our retired badges.

Here is a link from an attorney that describes the situation better than I can.

And this is the link to the AG's opinion:

I am not aware that anything has changed so I am not taking a chance and I don't carry my retired badge - only my Retired ID card.

But as I said previously, my wallet is thick enough with cards, photos, and other junk, that I do not need to make it unbearably thick by carrying the retired officer flat badge in it.

My department issued me the retirement badge and the ID. They didn't say anything about not carrying the badge. They just gave me a letter saying that I am no longer a peace officer.

And, it appears to me that the AG's opinion is for non-peace officers ("ordinary people") with "honorary badge." When I read the attorney's letter, it appears that the agency has a discretion to issue a retirement badge.
