Suction Cup Mounts on Windshield

A couple years ago I bought a Ram Mount holder for cell phone / GPS with a suction cup mount. At the time it was "illegal" to use a suction cup on a windshield so you had to use a dash plate, cup holder adapter, etc.

I decided to use it on my truck. I did some research and apparently they changed the CVC to allow small areas of the windshield for Fast Trak devices but also GPS devices inc. phones with mapping apps, etc.

Just wanted to be sure my research was not faulty and that I CAN use a suction cup mount for a GPS device on the lower / left corner of my windshield.

There has always been an area of the windshield where temp registration, parking decals etc could be stuck. I think it's a 6"x6" space in the lower corners of the windshield.

IIRC, I thought that there was NOTHING allowed to be affixed/ displayed/ or otherwise attached to the WINDSHIELD or front side windows.

What was that, CVC 26708?

I have not looked it up in a long time but I have had my share of those damn cites (twice) but after I stopped looking like a teen (and got my plates 10-35) they left me alone

But by attaching ANYTHING like that to your front windshield you are giving yourself PC to get pulled over. I believe that TINT law says NOTHING, not NO TINT, but NOTHING may be installed... And yes, it is the officer's discretion so once they pull you over for having that illegal registration they find that it is legit and leave you alone to drive off- Unless they find something else. And most cops leave people alone so they can drive around with the temporary reg papers on their windshields all day long. I hope they are still pulling folks over for that (because I have had many issues with criminals that don't mind FAKING that paperwork and thus ripping off the DMV and others).

This question about suction cups though. Reminds me of a stupid dashcam commercial I keep seeing late night on TV where someone attaches a dashcam that charges up via battery and it records in HD and it is RIGHT THERE in the middle of your window (because we all know they record best from inside the glove box right?). So I wonder now that all of this new technology has been developing and all of these morons are sticking cameras all over the place if the CVC has been or will be changed to accomodate this. Makes me wonder.

I DO recall a section being added to allow for devices that talk to govt/agencies and allow payment (fasttrack) but I do not think that included anything else. I wonder though about this new dashcam (windshield cam) though and how many people buy it and get popped for having one. I think that there would not be any legalities made for attachign something right in the middle of your windshield like they do in the commercial. At least not in CA.
