Anyone take a polygraph for a law enforcement job?

Ill have to take one as part of the hiring process for a job I'm taking eventually. I'm just wondering how you prepare? I naturally sweat a lot and I'm scared I'll fail.

I have Hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet. It comes and goes at random, but is nearly guaranteed to happen under a situation that would make your average joe pretty nervous.

I've 'passed' about a dozen polygraphs over the last 30 years.

So, if you're simply concerned about the sweating aspect...don't sweat it

You can't prepare. Just know its the examiner not the machine that is the magic potion. Just be honest and you'll have no problem. The examiner accounts for natural deviations.

Above all, be honest! I know many officers from my former agency that failed their poly multiple times and still got hired. It's a witch hunt

FYI, Don't change your answer, even if they try the "oh don't worry, just tell me the real story". They will call you a liar and you're out.

Haha OK. I'm not generally a nervous person but when undergoing an event that would make everyone nervous I'm only 100% sure id sweat like crazy. I just don't want the guy doing the polygraph to be like, oh hey, your pulse is very high and you're sweating like crazy. You must be lying about everything.

Polys are bunch of snake oil peddlers who think they have pixie dust magic. There is a reason courts do not accept them. It's an opinion, not facts.

It's an easy way for departments to weed out people. They put the heat on you, tell you your full of **** and come clean now or else.... So if you hid something, to squeal like a stuck pig or end up defend your honor as some quack tells you your a lying bag of steaming tihs all whilst he knows you are clean.

But, I really don't have an opinion about them. And yes I "passed" them.

When you're done don't deviate from what you've just told the polygrapher. He'll ask you some questions challenging what you just discussed after the test. If you admitted to smoking mj 5 times in high school during the test, don't let him nice talk you into saying "well maybe I smoked 10 times since high school" after the test is complete. They're looking for untruthfulness. Be honest during the test. Don't change your answer to appease the guy doing the exam. This is when he's looking for a change in answers. Everybody had done stupid stuff. They don't want squeaky clean. They want integrity.

Ok do they only ask about drugs and crime? Or other stuff like if you have a kinky sex life?

You're overthinking it, just be honest and you have nothing to worry about, end of story...

You get asked a bunch of weird questions about everything and get asked the same questions just in different ways. Just tell the truth. One of the most odd questions had to do with fantasies with opposite sex parent.

I ended up passing the first time around.

They will ask if you researched polygraphs. Good luck in you endeavors.

It always amazed me how many criminal cases came to life during the background process. If a candidate (not you OP) was more than a parent to their dog, they shouldn't show up. Some 288's and 261.5's were the proverbial "skeletons in the closet."

If your clean and you know it, go forth and prosper.

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
