A background investigator I know told me this true story:

He asked a candidate if he had smoked pot recently, and the candidate replied he had.

When asked how recently, the candidate said since he was nervous about the interview he had hotboxed on the way there.

It shouldn't hurt you if it's that old.
DO NOT lie on your background paperwork or interview because it is an absolute disqualification if they catch it.

I was like 16. When I did it. it wasn't for me. I don't even drink. I know for the LAPD the told us they don't care if you smoked pot in the pass but anything else your ****ed. I got on with the Customs without any problems back home. So was just checking how the PD out here deals with people who smoked pot when they were kids.

All smartassery aside, recreational use of marijuana 20 years ago will most certainly be a non-issue.

Nobody cares honestly. However, lie about what happened 20 years ago and you're screwed. Integrity is the measurement.

Why waste your time proving you're a decent human being if that isn't a prerequisite for hire? If an employer doesn't value honesty, they won't be honest with you either.

If it happened 20 years ago, even if you lied, how would anyone ever know? Only way is if there is a current paper trail..... not even a polygraph would tell them, unless you're retarded and can't handle a poly

Disclose it. My informed opinion is that it won't be an issue.

The drug use 20 years ago is a non issue. Some people in here are telling you to lie and if you do, you will be caught and then disqualified for life for being a liar. 95 percent of todays applicants have tried weed at some point, we know that and accept it for what is, experimentation. As long as you haven't done it in the last 3 to 5 years, dependant on dept, it is a non issue. 95 percent of the dq's for my department are due to honesty on the application with drug use. Ignore those on here with limited moral or ethical character and be honest and you willl be fine. Since you already work for customs, most departments may fast track you. Good luck.

I think past marijuana use would be an assett to an LEA.

Example: I smoked and grew pot for quite awhile when I was young. Don't anymore and haven't for a long time. However, I can spot a pothead or a grower from a mile away. How they dress, how they talk, what the inside of their car looks like.....it is second nature lol.

I have a cousin who is CHP. He "regaled" me one day about the "special" training he went through to identify drug users. I was respectful, but was laughing inside (dude has no drug experience whatsovever).

I truly think it would help LE to have people on staff who actually have experienced that world.
If anything, it would save on all of that ridiculous training.
