Yes. The ability, or lack thereof, to use complete and coherent sentences can also be used during the hiring process.

It will probably depend more on how you explain your drug use and if they believe you.

This has been edited, but it still doesn't make any sense. If you smoked pot 20 years ago, how is anyone going to know? Did you get popped for possession? I'm not understanding the context here.

Never got popped. It's about being upfront about it. As some PD ask about it,

I think you'll be good even admitting it from 20 years ago. Were you under or over 18 years old? Did you continue to do it showing a pattern or poor decision making. That is really what they are looking to see.

I've never smoked marijuana, or taken hard drugs, and it worked against me being honest of that fact.

I didn't go to backgrounds for leo though. I applied for a job at an leo agency and was surprised I made it all the way to backgrounds/lie detector. Didn't pass the lie detector test even though I was honest. Guy had a hard on for me about the drug and sex questions.

In retrospect I felt like I should have lied about the drug stuff. Probably still fail though. YMMV but I don't think it's something you have to worry about.

Seems like a double edge sword. If you go in and say you never used, they don't believe you. You say you have tried once, bad moral character. The fact is, there are people like myself who have seen what drugs have done and chose not to partake in that. But everyone seems to have the mentality of "Everyone's tried it once"

                              Overheard in a polygraph interview:

"Have you ever paid for sex?"

                              "Yes. I'm married."
