Surge in 5150's

Several of the crazies I've spoken to recently suggested they are "5150" because it gets them disability benefits of around $700 per month. Add that to the indigent funds our county provides along with other non-cash benefits and a slacker / doper / drunken self-induced "5150" can scratch out a living. Yeah, the 5150's have definitely increased in my area, especially those in the mid twenties age group.Comment

I think it's a host of factors: Large population of "crazies" use nasty drugs like crystal meth, they get SSI/etc which they promptly spend on dope/alcohol/whatever, "crazies" have little to no support structure because economic downturn has shrunk county/state mental health budgets as well as friend/family budgets, "crazies" who commit frequent minor crimes are no longer incarcerated, lack of meaningful programs for the mentally ill, being described as "mentally ill" at least as far as 5150/initial mental health car goes is an easy label to get (I have seen "5150" four year olds... really?), etcStay classy, CGF and Calguns.Originally posted by bwiese[BTW, I have no problem seeing DEA Agents and drug cops hanging from ropes, but that's a separate political issue.]Comment

Crazies seem to be attracted to the Golden State.
Too many people from other states who grew up in less than perfect circumstance move to California in order to search for their "California Dream." When unsuccessful, they inevitibly go back to their old ways [ie: dope] and we have the problems we do.Comment

Anyone with a mental, emotional, or behavioral issue. Particularly if it causes an individual significant distress, impairs their ability to function in life, and/or significantly increases their risk of death, pain, disability, or loss of freedom.Comment

not a LEO, but LAST TIME I WAS IN JAIL.......
I'd say at least 50-51% of the inmates were border line mildly crazy in one way or another, and that was clearly the reason they were in jail, not anything you call "criminal intent". This was my assessment of them after they'd been fully detoxing for days and weeks. A good number may have run afoul of the law on a drug issue, but it was clear they had other non-drug crazy qualities that were pretty obvious even in a jail setting where things are kinda weird anyways.
In addition to semi-crazy, many were border line retarded, and/or retarded/crazy. Some were what you might call Mentally Ill with delusions or obsessions (and some of them knew and admitted it) and some where just really quirky (and some knew and admitted it).
I'd say about 1/3 knew they had mental issues and had been in and out of jail for years as a result. Naturally, that makes it really hard to hold a job or housing, even if they are otherwise not borderline retarded and competent enough at some work.
Lets face it, modern society is really strange and complex when compared with how things were 1000 or even 50 years ago.
Lots of the people in jail were obviously guys that weren't quite crazy enough to become Wards of the State, but were just crazy enough that sooner or later, one way or another, they would find themselves having the Law called on them by someone, most likely another semi-crazy person.
Since responding LEO can't spend the next few weeks full time as the subject's personal Familial Authority Figure, they'd have to arrest them.
This was back when Counties were making money for every day anyone was in jail with State Funding. Now its all about releasing everyone except the most violent offenders.
So it makes sense lots of semi-crazies are gonna be showing up.
Also, every poor nation (low per capita GDP so that includes Red China) on Earth has a long term on-going semi-official Govt funded program of sending their crazy people to the USA where they have a better chance of receiving the expensive life-long adult baby sitting they need.
PS-Aside from the inmates that were crazy themselves, about 30% were in for DV type charges due to Crazy Chicks. Even taking into consideration I was hearing only one side of the story, it was a real eye opener about the dangers of getting involved with hot, but crazy, chicks. Typical story was "Yeah, there were warning signs but I was thinking with my penis and lets face it crazy is hot in bed" etc.Last edited by The Last American Hero; 03-30-2015, 11:14 AM.Am I a good shot!?!, YEAH I'M A GOOD SHOT!....i just got bad aimComment

Spent my last 12 yrs working with the mentally ill and disabled...a lot more going on in the background having to do with funding, care, and housing but I would say yes...there has been a steady increase of cases I had seen and worked with. People out of prison, people coming back from the military, and so on. Frankly, we had been joking in the past year that its the perfect storm.Comment

There are many so terms and definitions that can split hairs but a true 5150 comes with this form.

It's not un-common for us to pull a 5150 hat trick on day shift, I've done it more than once. IMO it's usually a combination of alcohol/meth induced psychosis. It starts with a mental health condition that is undiagnosed/treated with street drugs. After that, the narcotics take things to a whole new level and the person's brain is just fried, thus continuing the cycle.Certified Colt 1911 Armorer // Certified Glock Armorer // Certified M&P ArmorerComment

I have interviewed subjects who haven't used meth years, yet there are still permanent neurological effects from previous use. Typically it is nervous twitching, no attention span, and constant involuntary movement, what you might call "ants in the pants." Not to mention looking 15 years older than actual age, often with missing teeth.Comment
