    Surge in 5150's

Not a LEO but an RN. Here on the Central Coast there has been a sustained surge in psych patients showing up to the hospital. I understand that some local services have been lost over the past few years and this is likely contributing. My personal feeling is that we are also still seeing the effects of a nasty recession and two wars but I haven't seen any reports yet that support this view.

I was just curious about what you guys are seeing in this regard? Is this a state-wide issue? My guess is that if more folks with these problems are going to the hospital then there must be more getting picked up by the PD as well.

Meth is a misdemeanor now. Do the math.

I can only speak to youth mental illness. We have seen a definite spike in psych intakes. We have units dedicated to housing these type of criminals. We have found that most of it is drug induced, I have seen kids come in normal on their first entry and then completely gone on their next one. Quite honestly we have nowhere to put them, we'll send them to a psych ward, they'll get doped up and returned to us and we'll play that game until he/she gets released. When they have a melt down we'll send them to the ER and hope there is a bed available for them in the psych, if not, there have been times we have sat in the ER for days because we have nowhere to put them.
Also, there is no treatment once they get released or age out of the system, so then they become homeless and somebody elses problem. It's a pretty messed up situation all the way around.

I figure the mental stress of believing so much that is not so is taking its toll on the average Democrat voter in the SPRK.

              1. The world is over-medicated and under parented.

              2. Drugs

              3. Society accepts it as an excuse for almost anything.

Central coast? Do you remember "diaper man"? How about "Roger"? Roger save my butt more than once while he was lurking in the shadows and I was playing rent-a-cop in SLO.

I work in downtown San Diego. In the last 5 years, the 5150 population has increased steadily. I always thought it was drugs, but its not just drugs. Some of the homeless really are "5150."

Police are complaining the prisons/jails are now releasing so many "non-violent" inmates, whatever that means, many of which are truly nut bags.

I don't have any answers, but YES, the 5150's are multiplying.

I still blame Obama and his liberal pals.

I like how this turned political so quickly, for no reason.

I'm in Monterey County so not quite in the same area. "Diaper Man" sounds interesting though.

Regarding the comments on meth and Prop 47 (voted on Nov. 2014) the change I'm describing has been over the last year or two and really started upticking as far back as 2009. I haven't noticed a change in meth use in the population I'm working with but that, fortunately, hasn't been as big a problem as it has for other communities. If you guys on the front line are seeing a difference since prop 47 that information has been slow in getting out to the rest of us. I could only find a couple recent articles. Not enough time yet to do a meaningful study.

                        One article I found
Jose Ibarra snapped on latex gloves, pushed aside an upturned sofa and rummaged through the belongings piled below an underpass in Silver Lake.

                          Liberal policies have consequences.

Did you have a question for a LEO or are you here for no reason?
