I go to Minden a couple times a year. There is an awesome Mexican joint a block away from the Carson Valley Inn, across the street. It’s a stand alone place with its own parking lot. I can’t remember the name right now, but I will and I will repost it. Aside from that, you MUST visit the Douglas County Shooting Range. $5 all day, call your own breaks. Awesome facility.

I’m generally a poor guide for restaurants, because I’m not a foodie and I rarely go anywhere that’s not in walking distance. Partly because I live in Midtown, my favorite Mexican place is:

El Adobe Cafe & Sports Bar
                55 W Arroyo St, Reno, NV 89509
                775-327-4422

The have spicy salsa and honestly the best albóndigas soup I have ever had anywhere (and I’m from SoCal). Otherwise the food is typical Mexican food. Like almost all restaurants in Nevada that serve dinner, they have a full bar.

Another pretty good place I used to go to, closer to Downtown, is:

                Bertha Miranda's
336 Mill St, Reno, NV 89501
                775-786-9697

When I moved here ten years ago most of my crew were Mexicans, and the sales director was a foodie. She claimed the best Mexican in town is:

                La Fonda
                4385 Neil Rd #109, Reno, NV 89502
                775-284-2950

As I say, I’m not much of a judge. I will say I’m not crazy about Miguel’s on Virginia Street in Midtown. Though it is also close to my house and has a lot more history (and fame) than El Adobe, it seems more like a cookie-cutter Mexican restaurant, nothing special. El Adobe is right around the corner, so go there instead.

As for bars, I’m normally a dive bar kind of guy, and my favorite dive bar in town is the first one I walked into the first night I came here in 2016:

                Copenhagen Bar
2140 Prater Wy, Sparks, NV 89431
                775-358-5672

But I don’t go in there much anymore, partly because it’s kind of far and Uber has gotten expensive, but also because I am getting kind of tired of hanging around old people. It’s a big reason I am no longer involved with Hot August Nights. Too many old people.

Instead, I spend most of my time at:

                The Z Bar
                1074 S Virginia St, Reno, NV 89502
                775-348-1723

It’s a very eclectic crowd at the Z Bar, mostly younger people, which of course means the music is usually atrocious. But that hiphop crap is playing everywhere I go anymore, so I guess I’m getting used to it. It’s part of modern life. The Z Bar has a very nice patio where you can smoke (and the gas fire pits are nice as the weather cools). You can also smoke inside the Copenhagen, and also at another cool little Midtown dive bar:

                Alibi Lounge
125 Casazza Dr, Reno, NV 89502
                775-507-4756

The Champagne of Beers is available at the Alibi for only $3.00 a bottle. In 2026! Regrettably, that’s also the best beer they have, aside from Guinness.

Other bars around here where you can smoke are the Wonder Bar, the Swiss Bar, and on the patios at 40 Mile Saloon and the Chapel Tavern (which attracts what I call the LinkedIn crowd).

I liked going here when I was in Reno. It's a bit far for me to do a meetup now (2500+) miles
