Any tips / tricks / advice for a Future Soldier?

Hi and thank you for your service.

Still waiting for BTC. 4 months down. 3 months to go. Shipping on January 3rd. That time flew by in an instant pretty much. I was 185 lbs. and now I'm 145, thanks to everyone's advice here on the forum. But my running time is still absolutely horrible. 10:00!

Can I have more advice? It can be regarding anything. Whether it's an exercise tip or don't-do's in BTC. Or even a story of yours or something you experienced in service.

We will have our own stories sure enough.

I ship next week, and the time flew. Friday is my last day of work, and I hope I never have to return to finance again.

      Memorize:
      General orders
      Creed
      Alphabet
      Army Values

      MEMORIZE THEM!!!!!!!!!

Folks have been know to recite the Creed in the chamber. So if you can do it in one breath you are good to go. I however know I won't be able to make it. So I hope they tell us to recite General Orders.

Don't be that guy that cries everyday. I swear there is one in every platoon.

I, like most people recommend you be the gray man. But unlike most people, I will say if you are a leader, be a leader. Step up to the plate. Just don't be one of those annoying jackasses. You know, the guys that always butts into conversations they aren't part of to throw in their "experiences" or the guys that power trip.

Prepare to be sick most of the time. Once one person brings in a cold or something it will spread and mutate and spread some more. I think I was sick for 2/3 of my time there.

As soon as one person gets pink eye, break out the hand sanitizer and bleach!!! Seriously.

This leads me to my last point. Wash your *** (and everything else). I know there are time constraints, but you can still maintain decent hygiene. Don't be the dirty kid. Don't let there be a dirty kid. That's how people get sick and stay sick.

You really get no extra points for being "the leader" in basic. Dont be they guy who draws attention to himself by being a turd, and don't jump up and take charge...but readily accept any challenge / duty with enthusiam and a mindset of mission completion. And you will be a drill instructors dream.

Every military course I have been to comes with the "type-A" guy who wants everyone to know he's cool....reality: he's a tool, and he's drawing fire, which takes the heat off of you. Once you leave basic, there is no record whatsoever that you were second or third...and your day was easier because tool-boy had something to prove. Stepping up matters at your unit, among your actual peers and the leaders who sign your paycheck....wait until then.

I had a good experience in basic training. I volunteered every single time one of the Drill Sergeants asked for volunteers and most of the time the details didn't suck and it put me on the Drill Sergeants good side.

To get better at running run with people that are slightly faster than you. I notice even now that when I run alone I go slower but when I'm running with 2 or more other people that I know are faster than me I tend to speed up.

Oh, and don't get in a fight in the showers. I saw 3 of them in my basic training cycle and they are funny to watch but the dudes who got their asses beat were very embarrassed that they got their asses beat by dudes with their dicks out.

I think I was healthy week 1 and week 10. The other 8 weeks I could barely shoot my eyes and noes were so drippy and nasty. Don't be a sick call ranger and go to the medics every morning for that crap either. You'll miss PT, and get labeled a sick call ranger- and you definitely don't want that.

I didn't have to say a word. My DIs gave me a mask that was too big and I never got a good seal. I started tearing up as soon as I walked into the room. Then my throat started to tickle. Once they started with the gas, I got all snotty and it really started to suck. I was surprised at how many dudes actually puked.

I watched the toughest girl I have ever known hop and and down and whimper like... well, a girl- in that gas chamber. **** sucks.

No one puked when I was gassed in the police academy. The instructors made us stand up straight, put our arms out sideways, and breath. That helped a lot. Otherwise, my instinct was to keel over and keep coughing.

I'll be keeping that bit of information to myself
