    How do you respond

How do you guys respond when someone asks you what do or did in the military? Most of the time I get something like 11 bravo or whatever the MOS line is. It's been a while since I've heard any of them, so I couldnt tell you what is what right now.

Reason I ask, is cause (i'm a cop) I pulled someone over quite a while ago and saw that he was sporting the Marine Corp Emblem sticker on his rear bumper. When I asked what he did in the military (guy had been LONG retired) he said I was in Vietnam ... I was in the infantry. Couldn't give me a platoon number, regiment, and had that look of please don't ask me anymore questions. Also when I asked of MOS he had a deer in the headlight look.

I was just wondering how you guys answer, "so what do you do in the military?" when the question comes up and does it differ when different people ask.

Anyhow, thanks for all your service and keep your heads low.

I say, "A lot of different things" and leave it at that. If you want to do a formal inquisition I can spout off DD214 and ROS technical info with you, but thats all boring and most people who werent in the military wouldnt understand.

I tell them I was a Forward Observer. Most still don't know what that means.

I tell them S-2/powerpoint ranger, hardly anyone knows my MOS. That or refer to my last unit, 4ID... I haven't been out for very long and I still work with the military so it is all mostly fresh in my head.

Ain't that the truth, and often the CoC don't know how to properly utilize us.

It depends entirely on who's asking. I'm usually vague with civilians because most don't really understand the idea of a MOS. The more military-oriented they are I'll discuss position and duties.

Not all services use the acronym MOS, and in the scheme of things, MOS is a relatively new term.
In my day, SNAFU was the most widely used acronym.
                  Wait, is CLUSTERF*CK an acronym?

My general answer: "Im a Soldier"

Nobody needs to know any more than that.

Generally speaking, I am reluctant to discuss my military years with strangers. There's NEVER one simple question. They keep asking until you stop answering. If anything, "EOD" which used to be completely unknown to 99.9%.
