do it. plan on 25 years & retiring. start working towards your phd asap. take a look @ officer pay and then think about retiring @ 75% for life. you will be done by age 48. not a bad plan if you ask me. i only wish now that i would have had the foresight to do this.
good luck!

My best advice to you is to think about going enlisted first for a couple years, to get into the field/job that you would like, and then going into Officer Candidate School after that. Get your feet on the ground and figure out what the military is all about, and how to actually be a soldier. You will earn a lot more respect from your subordinates this way, as well as be a much better leader in the long run by doing this.sigpic

I agree about the respect part, BUT if I had the chance to join as an officer, I would go that route. Make a lot more money, and I'm not sure how easy it is to get accepted to OCS once you are already in.My best advice to you is to think about going enlisted first for a couple years, to get into the field/job that you would like, and then going into Officer Candidate School after that. Yes I do have the Military Police behind my mind, also I saw that the USMC has a civilian military police opportunity open, that says you need L.E background, military, or educational. I guess that is also a route?Comment

I would not join the military as a last resort. Join because you want to serve, not because you don't have better options. If you go in with that mentality it'll show & you won't have the respect of those you are chosen to lead.Comment

Best advice I've seen thus far. From LEO's I've talked to it is better to go into general combat arms (Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery) because as an MP you would have to unlearn a lot of habits, whereas as a combat arms guys are fluent in tactical applications. I would also suggest Intelligence, my field as it can help set you up for the three letter agencies. My best advice to you is to think about going enlisted first for a couple years, to get into the field/job that you would like, and then going into Officer Candidate School after that. A fresh butter bar has a lot of ground to make up without any enlisted experience. Serving as a lower enlisted will also give you perspective of what it is like for the people you would lead if you so choose to go officer.
I would counter the recommendation to plan on doing 25 years off the bat. There are many things to consider which cannot be known until you do a few years and a deployment. Don't get mentally invested that you must stay in for the 20 year mark before you have had enough time to decide if you'll enjoy it enjoy to keep doing it. There are tons of oppertunities to be had from serving, don't think the only ones are GI Bill and retirement.sigpic

what he said. You should go because you want to go in and be proud of your decision. Dont make it on a whim and last resort.
Also +1 on going in as enlisted and then going to OCSWTB:
1)AR15 Aero Precision Skeletonized Lower
2)S&W 686 6in barrel ...686 No dash through 686-4
3) Saltworks M5 upper/lower set

Do something else.
If you join as a "last resort" youll just hate your life for the next 4 to 8 years, youll make life miserable for yourself and those around you.
If you do decide to join, go for the OCS program, dont listen to that "enlisted first" crap. You spent the time and money to get your degree, put it to use for you. Soldiers will respect the rank you wear not who you are. If they cant deal with that, they need to GTFO of my Army.

Dont be suprised if you cant get in to the Military. In my experience, most of the folks who wanted to join as a "last resort" werent qualified anyways. A college degree doesnt make you smart, physically fit or morally eligible.
Just a warning.Last edited by CavTrooper; 02-14-2011, 2:53 PM.Comment

I'm not thinking he falls into this category. He may not be in shape, but I'm sure he is smart enough and morally eligible. Most people who join as a "last resort" aren't about to graduate college with a BS in a week, either.Do something else.

I kind of joined as a last resort.. 8 years later I'm still in, happy and don't regret signing up. I'm upset I didn't do it sooner and wasted a year doing nothing.Comment

You would be suprised.
Like I said, a college degree doesnt make you smart or anything else, it just makes you a guy who can regurgitate information from a book. During my tour on recruiting duty I made it a point to find OCS candidates because most recruiters are too lazy to do the work involed in getting them in. I had 10 successful OCS candidates is 2 years, I had at least that many jokers who wanted to go OCS who couldnt make the required scores on the ASVAB. I had a few who couldnt even pass the ASVAB with a qualifying score to enlist and one knucklehead that graduated from CalPoly Pomona with a BS in Finance who score a 12 on the ASVAB.... twice. When he asked me what he should do, I told him to go back to the school and ask for a refund.
Colleges dont do PT tests or background checks, they just take your money and give you pieces of paper that say you know stuff. The Military on the other hand is a little tougher to get in to for some folks.Comment

Keep this in mind: if you go in as an officer, you don't pick your job. You pick officer. You could be infantry just as much as you could be communications or supply. If you enlist first, you'll be able to get in the field like you want to.
I'm not saying you can't go in as an officer first, I'm just saying that with my experience in the Army, you will make a much better leader that will carry forward from just your time in the military.
I could go on about it being a last resort, but I'll keep my mouth shut on that one.sigpic
