I went to Squad Designated Marksman school - it was a long range (600m) shooting school, and it was pretty awesome. So I was just asked to make a list of schools I would like to go to when we get back from this deployment. I am trying to go to airborne, but other than that I really don't have any ideas. My buddy said there is a long range marksmanship school (not sniper school), I'm not sure if that is the exact name but it sounds cool. I would like to know what you guys recomend. MAC courses - if you wanna learn to be a better fighter
B4 school - fun school, learn a lot, and possibly fill a role
Mountaineering - Awesome school
Pathfinder - that will put you to the test (not sure if available anymore)
AA - Kinda a pain in the *** with all the sling load and knot **** but worth it.
EIB - Puts you through the ringer and will test you. 11B stuff
Don't forget your NCOES schools. If you're an E4P or higher then go get that knocked out. Anyone that has seen time in country has something to give to our jr enlisted and even those ball busting butters. Learn to teach...EFFECTIVELY!Comment

From talking to guys that went through OSUT, they said I would be an insert. Basic I would join a platoon after they finished the basic training part of OSUT. They said I would be treated differently and live in a different area of the barracks. I would have much more freedom as well. Not sure of the exact details and really, I have been through much worse so I'm not to worried.Comment

HBCT
Honestly, I don't know yet...my experience with the Army consists of OSUT then right to Iraq. I would like to spend some time in garrison first.
A bit of both, if the Army is paying for me to learn some cool stuff then it seems like the best of both worlds.

Kid, don't waste your time with Air Assualt, Pathfinder, and Airborne. Those are easy to get.
The first thing a Soldier should master is his weapon. There are 5 schools on ATRRS (google "atrrs course catalog," key word search "marksmanship") that you should attend, 3 are at Ft. Lewis, and 2 are at Camp Robinson, AR.
From most important to least:
Squad Designated Marksman (school code 1029) the best shooting school in the Army.
Combat Marksmanship Training Course LVL 1 (there is no level 2, but the course is ten days and 5000 rounds of balls to the wall short range marksmanship, it is physically tough and a great deal of fun)
Practical Extended Range Rifle Course (Ft. Lewis)
Combat Pistol Application Course (Lewis)
Small Arms Master Gunner (school code 1029, Arkansas) everything you need to know about army small arms, planning and conducting live fire training.
Once you knock out those, you'll be amazed at what you didnt know you didnt know. Most of the Army doesnt know crap about shooting, to include your drill sergeant. Outside of the Army Marksmanship Unit, the shooting know how is still maintained at Lewis and Camp Robinson. A 300 meter pop up is a money shot after SDM.
If you can find a group, wherever it is that you are going, get involved in crossfit. Check out crossfit workout of the day online, and do it. If you can max the PT test when you get back, see if you can get a Ranger School spot.
The "scare badges" really don't do crap for you. Think about it, they are all about delivering your body to the battlefield. woo hoo.
Master combat marksmanship, check out USPSA, and 3 Gun shooting, get involved in a club. People will be eating out of your hand and sitting at your feet listening to what you have to say because all Soldiers are really thirsty to shoot better, and if you are the guy that can do that... well, its a good gig.
Whatever you do, always challenge yourself. Think long term, as in 10 years out. The Army is a great opportunity, but it is what you make of it. Don't let the bad days define you. Oh yeah, think of this, there are only two things in the Army you can get a go at with a 60% score, they are the APFT and IWQ, don't settle for a "Go."Last edited by BIG_G; 01-09-2011, 10:45 PM.Comment

Even Islamic terrorists don't hate America like liberals do. They don't have the energy. If they had that much energy, they'd have indoor plumbing by now."
