i do agree that wearing the uniform is not really acceptable in all areas. i do see some soldiers mostly young ones wearing them at the mall and i kinda wonder why they are doing it. but it does'nt bother me that guys are in uniform at 7/11 or at burger king getting something to eat. that is not an issue at all.
While at school at a certain Army base, I saw soldiers of ALL ranks wearing their uniforms everywhere. Id be at the movies and see it, Golden Corral and see it, Wal Mart and see it. It was dissapointing in my eyes only because cammies are gross. We sweat in them, get em dirty, and rarely wash them haha. Im glad Marines cant wear their cammies out in town....they stink!

Looking in my USAF pubs list and regulations....I don't see the words "sweat or dirt" in there.

I think my combat boots are also waterproof, but I still tiptoe over puddles and small rain drops so I don't find out.

I did sweat once in my cammies, the AC went out so naturally in our emergency haste to leave work for the day, we broke out a sweat.

What the USAF calls horrible conditions, the Marines call "hey this ain't half bad" when they arrive.

      back to OP.
I wouldnt see a problem doing anything in cammies. I use my extras to work on the parents house and land. Thick knee protection, good fabric for dodging prickly plants and they take a beating. Stops bug bites and keeps horses from nibbling on me.

I don't know about PT in them and how good for joints that would be. Does USMC OCS PT in cammies or in dedicated PT gear?

Cant tell you about OCS, but I know we have boots and utes runs for enlisted on a daily basis, and in bootcamp we were IT'd (see crossfit) in them also on a daily basis. I know OCS is physically harder than enlisted training, so Im sure they see their fair share of boots and utes activity.

And youre right, its terrible for your knees, shins and feet. Its also the number cause of stress fractures in the Marine Corps.....and yet they take us on them everyday....shows how much they care right.

I'd say do not wear a hat/cap/cover and get normal shoes or boots. That would help from behind as to not misidentify you.

I had a friend wear all cammies, she did it for fun, but she got so many "thank you for your service" comments that she actually went out and signed up!!!

It shows that they care very much. Are you going to go to combat wearing just your PT gear and running shoes?

You train in the clothing and equipment that you fight in. Doing less would mean that your leaders did not care. If you are worried about how broken your body will be when you age, you are in the wrong line of work.

On to the OP's question. Coming from another Marine, if the uniform has the Eagle, Globe and Anchor in the pattern, I would prefer that it not be worn by anyone who has not earned the insignia. If it is just a commercial digital pattern copy, go for it, I could care less.

There is a fine balance between training to fight, and self attrition through wear and tear. The last time western troops charged in full combat gear over 1000meters was the Somme.

Most troops ride in APCs, walk on patrol, or man a fortification. Few, if any, actually run PT style in their boots.

If I were to PT in boots, Id buy lighter weight boots, oakley or other flexible soled designs. You may not be a battlefield casualty, but your loss of hearing, knees, back and vision will only be met with a few disability dollars and some pain killer pills. Fight smarter, not harder.

                  .
Running whether in formation or not is for shoes. Humps, patrols etc are for boots IMO, but hey, Im a POG. But, Ive been attached to the 1st Reg and 5th, so I see alot of grunts on a day to day basis. But who cares, boots and utes runs as much a part of the corps as field day and police call.

Not going to argue in someone elses thread, but anyone who thinks you do not run in combat can pm me and I will gladly give you verifiable examples.

Don't bother, they'll reteach you how to do all that. If you get used to doing wrong, it will be worse for you.

I think that it is disrespectful, wrong, and should not be allowed.

I know that there are tons of people that have never been, and have had no intention to ever be in the military, running around in cammies.

Regardless of whatever excuse you can come up with to "justify" it in your mind, I believe that it is wrong. If you are over the age of 15, there is no excuse for running around in a military uniform if you are not in, or have not been in, the military.

In this day and age you can get faux sets of BDUs in tons of colors that would not lead to someone mistaking you for a military member.

If you want to run around "training" in a military uniform - join the military. Until then. get a pair of cargo pants, and a dickies shirt.

Don't be so quick to pass out judgment, buddy. It was stated in the original post that the guy is going to join the military "come hell or high water"

Even with that being said, I agree with you to *SOME* extent. I get upset at people who wear uniform items with insignia if they have never been in the service. There is nothing wrong with wearing cammies - The majority of us did it when we were growing up, so why get upset because someone else wants to do it?

Now... To answer the original question. When it comes to Marine Corps issued cammies (ones with the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor printed on it) technically you are not supposed to wear them. Does that mean you are going to go to jail for it? No. But some of the old timer Marine Recruiters might pull you aside and say WTF. As a 5-year Marine SGT Vet, I say all the power to you if you are going to wear them. But the moment people disrespect them, or become "f*ck ups" for lack of better wording, then I have major issues with it.

I enjoy wearing communist-country patterned uniform articles, red star and all. You know, to get folks riled up.

There is nothing in the uniform regulations saying that technically they cant be worn, as long as there is no rank insignia on them as far as I know. If it is otherwise, can you post a link or other reference.
