you don't need any college credit, you just need a GED.

But i will add my caution, i am currently in the army and the rank of your average drill Sergent. What i can say is only join as a last option, the simple truth is being in the army sucks. Its not all jumping out of air planes, shooting the Taliban in the face and eating their heart. In fact, its a lot of cleaning **** and wasting your time for the stupidest reasons known to man. On top of that, if you insist on joining the military, id recommend one of the blue branches (navy or air force).

This is what the army is really like.

There are a lot of classes and mandatory training in the army. If you fall asleep your gonna end up doing push ups. Also, a fact most soldiers fail to realize is you need some college education if you want to retire with a decent rank, IE E-7/8/9. I cant tell you how many times i've seen E-6s with 18 years taking basic level college classes because they keep failing to make E-7. You can look at the pay scales, to retire as an E-6 is pretty lame. You can make almost as much living on social security.

I believe he said he is the rank of your average Drill Sergeant, not that he really is one.

correct, I'm not a DS, just speaking in civilian terms

While I'm not a recruiter, I'm pretty sure a GED will cut it, Ive had plenty of soldiers with just a GED. But why not ask the recruiter, I'm sure he would know more about it then I do.

Not one I was particularly interested in either, however when DA says go, youve gotta go.

Well at least I'm not the only one the man is holding down. At least it will be useful for moving up the SNCO ranks.

I was in your boat King Palm. I had no Diploma and no college. I went and saw an ARMY recruiter and he set me straight. He got me into a G.E.D. program and made no promises. I got my G.E.D. and went back to my recruiter. We then went and I took the ASVAB which has 2 passing scores. 30 for H.S. graduates and (if I recall correctly) 52 for non-graduates. I then scored a 57 (dont bag I was outta school for 15 years at this time). So at this point it took me a few months to get this far. So then his Sargent said I was overweight at the time I was 220 pounds and 5'8" tall. Also I have ALOT of tattoos nothing gang related mostly traditional western American art and I had to get a Pin-Up girl tattoo cover up done. NO-BOOBS in the ARMY some P.C. fem might find it offensive. So then comes the wiavers. Waivers for ALL of my tattoos and some of my Driving activities. So I lose the wight and make tape at the recruiters office get most of my paperwork taken care of and just needed to pay off the rest of my County of Sacramento fines (if you owe the County or the Feds.your a no-go). Also you cant be on probation of any kind. At this point it has been a year I am finally ready for MEPS and low and behold something else comes up time for more paperwork. Well long story short times changes the recruitment requirements have changed and now they require 15 College credits in order to be elligable for enlistment. And they have to be from a Tier 1 accredited college. No online crap it dont count. I have 4 units down and 11 to go. And then I MIGHT be good to go. Remember the Military don't want quitters. If you can't make it through the minimum schooling they require then they don't want you.

You guys have to keep in mind that right now times are tough and most people are not getting out of the military due to tough times and the economy. I heard higher ASVAB scores are needed and that most of the armed services are at full capacity. That being said, you will most likely need more than just a GED to get your foot in the door.

I would try to take those college classes needed and go from there.

Seems to me if you have been working this hard at improving your self over the past year and have been successful at it, you might want to just stay the course. Go ahead and finish up your college education and get a better job then the army. The army isn't that great, don't get me wrong it has its ups, but it also has a lot of downs.

BTW, congrats on losing the weight, i'm 5'9 and i weighed 200 pounds when i wanted to join the army, after losing 40 pounds in the span of 2 months i signed up and have been around 160lbs ever since. So i know how hard it can be.

One of the PFCs in that vid has a CIB. I'm pretty sure he hasn't spent his entire career in the Army scooping up trash.

This is not true. I am not sure why you think that you can't get your college credits over the internet or distance learning. First of all you can receive a RA or NA degree from an all online school or through the mail that is accredited. If online colleges are good enough for a person to become an officer in the military then why would it not be good enough for the 15 credits needed to join. Also online credit from an accredited source are good enough for your promotion points in the army for civilian education.

Just has to be an accredited college. Lots of regular colleges offer distance learning (online classes). Just cant be from some of the wall diploma mill, non-standard school. Basically, if they charge you money for a "diploma", its most likely not legit, for example, look up "Century High School" in Santa Monica, perfect example of a BS school.
