    Thinking about the USMC

ok, i have wanted to be a cop since i can remember, but i hear from more and more people that now they are looking for people with a military type background. so i'm thinking joining up will give me the experience they are looking for and also give me a chance to serve my country. anyone heard something similar about police departments/sheriff departments?

also i heard that if you go infantry its almost a surefire way to get into a law enforcement career

anyways just looking for any insight on my idea/plan

Military background is a good way to get your foot in the door in a variety of career fields, just make sure you take advantage of the educational opportunities as well and dont waste your time getting s**tfaced drunk and nailing Thai transvestite prostitutes (I understand thats a favorite pasttime of sailors and jarheads).

The MOS doesn't play too much a part in the background. Just being military helps.

I think a degree carries more weight though. Sad but true. I see college jockies who have not seen or done anything for their country be given preference over a military person. Pretty much once your hired you won't get any credit for military service while the degree gets you POST advancement faster.

If your only motivation to becoming a Marine is to get a leg up on another job, then I think you should reconsider.

I always thought the crotch test in the P.I. worked.

You can accomplish that in any other branch of the service with a LOT less misery.

I am the first in four generations not to be a Marine, for the simple reason that I listened to the old man. He made clear that if you are going to go into the service it is best to be an officer and that means college. College for me meant going to grad school afterwards so I never made it to the Marines.

If you are young and motivated go to college. You can start at junior/community if you do not have the high school grades and transfer to a four year and do ROTC. Don't rush it - take the good route. You won't regret having done so.

Every branch has options to try for thier elite units, Navy has SEALs, Army has Ranger and SF, even the Air Force has PJs.. if you dont have the confidence in yourself to be one of the truly elite, you could settle for the Marine Corps.

college doesn't appeal to me, at all. i have been out of school for nearly two years now and dont plan on going back. the marine corps however peaks my interest in a much better way to spend 4 years of my life and move me more towards my goals than college does. also to do my part as a patriot to preserve the American way of life and do my time

I say join the Marines for no other reason than the life experience. When I joined the work force after leaving the Marines (5 years active duty), all of my coworkers from college were extremely immature and looked for the boss to tell them what and when to do things. I took the initiative and told them what to do to save my boss the headache. I was a manager in less than 4 years in company that had not had a new manager in the department for over 10 years. Most of the Marine NCOICs that I had the fortunate to work with were very professional, not to say there were not some sh*tbirds in the mix. JJDIDTIEBUCKLE - learn it, live it.

That's too bad. Maybe one day it will. If you are young, I think it is a mistake to not go to college, but being young you can do so later. But, chances are you will always be enlisted and not an officer. Still, nothing wrong with that. I agree with the other poster that you maturity level will jump, you will learn to pay attention to detail and instructions, learn to watch out for your fellow Marines, and gain valuable experience.

I do have to disagree though that college will not help you get to law enforcement. You do have a better chance with college.

Come on now, the Marine Corps does all the things all those other so called "elite" teams do, we just expect it of all Marines not just a few hard chargers. That's why every deployed unit is tagged SOC, special operations capable, that means, if it needs to be done and the Marines are there, they do it and don't need help, often.

If the OP wants to be a Marine, you better really want it, we don't take people who are wishy washy, we want patriots, people who want more than just a career afterward, we want men and women who want to serve their country with the best of the best (not to sound too cliche) that's why our Corps is a few, a proud few amongst the multitudes of American Servicemen and Women. Also if you are considering law enforcement post service, consider MPs.

Each man must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, which course is patriotic and which isn't. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide against your conviction is to be an unqualified and excusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let men label you as they may. ~Mark Twain
