Guns on base: Did Trump keep his promise (yet)?

    First off, I'm non-.mil

This is all off of memory, so details may be off.

During the campaign, Trump mentioned both that Muslim psych Doc who shot up a base killing several, and that other attack upon, IIRC a Navy or Marine recruiting station. Trump said the ban on guns on base was due to a Bill Clinton executive order and that he'd reverse that so that members of the military would be able to defend themselves.

    Has that ban been reversed?

Current situation requires an O-6 or above signature if I remember it correctly. Signed into effect last November.

I don't understand. Is he being forced out for being an ammo-grabbing fascist or for being a failure as an ammo-grabbing fascist?

Although the ban has been lifted, like everything in the military, it is up to the Commanders discretion. In the Army i know it is the Garrison Commander who need to approve it.

I honestly don't see any CO of any base authorizing this without being directly ordered.

There is just too much liability and too little support from on high. All it would take is one negligent discharge from some idiot who managed to get authorization and the CO that authorized it would be toast.

I'd imagine officers being very reluctant to sign off on that. Some idiot kid shoots himself in the foot and they are liable (meaning it'll hurt their career.)

Remember, Trump can only sign bills into laws after they pass both chambers of Congress.

Other than that, he's got very limited powers (such as Executive Orders).

What he did a GREAT job on was his replacement for Justice Scalia. Rumors have it that Justice Kennedy will retire in June. Now if only RBG and/or Breyer will leave the Court....

                But back on topic ...

So, Trump did lift the ban???

But it sounds like you guys are under, essentially, a "May Issue" carry system like us in CA re. CCWs.

Thanks for all the replies and your service.

I can't speak for here in CA, but I do carry is authorized on Camp Williams, UT, when I was there for SLC one of my fellow students who is also an RTI instructor carried the whole time. I kick myself for not buying his M&P Shield from him, he offered a hell of a deal on it. That was prior to Trump being elected as well.

Hasn't been lifted on any Air Force installation that I know of.

At least on MY base (National Guard- So Cal), they have a CCW program, you get a Memo from a Col. and are on a account that would alert you of a active shooter or attack.

I know of at least one AF base in CA that allows reservists who are LE on the outside concealed carry on base. The O6 has been signing off on it. Working on it slowly.
