Working on an Army base...with troops...every E5 gets address as Sergeant...

Why the FRACK is that??!?!

Coming from the Marines...I was taught to address them as their proper rank...only slight exception was gunny or master guns...

This is amusing me that a SFC is still called Sergeant...

Can someone explain???

When I was in we called all the Sergeants by there ranks as in Staff,Sergeant First Class,ect from First Sergeant on up to Command Sergeant Major you had better not forget to address them by there pay grade.

Its how the Army customs and traditions works. E5- E7 (and E8 Master Sergeants) are informally referred to as Sergeant.

It took me a bit to adjust when dealing with Marines, I apologized to a bunch of Staff Sergeants for just calling the Sergeant.

Since disbanding the higher SPC grades it is a recruiting tactic of the Army. No other service allows folks to enlist at the level of E4 (with a 4 year degree). It also allows those Jr enlisted to promote to SPC (E4) automatically pending they are good to go.

CPL is an actual NCO rank and is responsible for soldiers accordingly, and I've only seen it used to promote SPC to CPL because there wasn't any SGT slots open.

Years ago the army had SPC though E9 back in the Vietnam days. However, regardless of "grade" they still didn't technically have NCO authority.

So that causes a problem with a SGT E5 starts barking out orders to a SPC 7.
Which probably is why the ranking system didn't last. Plus there were more hoops to jump though the NCO grades than there was for the SPC grades.

So unmotivated soldiers would ride the SPC pay scale without the headaches of being an NCO.

Now only the SPC 4 is around, Army CPL's are few and far between for the conflicts rarely come up.

Oh, and in basic training, the Drill SGTs would only bark out orders to the company as Privates. It was pretty great because I knew they couldn't be talking to me.

Your original post seemed to be specifically geared towards Sergeants so I didn't elaborate.

MSG are often addressed as "master sergeant" out of respect, but it is not required. And yes in the SOF world first names are frequently used. I was blessed with an incomprehensible last name, so it works out!

In the Air Force all NCO's are addressed as "Sergeant" with the exception of a Chief Master Sergeant who is addressed as "Chief." Over the last 10 years or so, Senior Master Sergeants have been unofficially addressed as "Senior." The Air Force came from the Army, so it sounds right that for the most part all the NCO ranks are addressed as "Sergeant." I'm guessing the exception is First Sergeant and Sergeant Major.
